Aroma: Spices as clove, pepper, and spicy yeast. Sweet esters, orange citrus, apple. Smells very sweet. No alcohol.

Appearance: Deep gold. Cloudy. Large bubbles sticking to the bottom of the glass, small bubbles rising. Pours a medium white head, which quickly dissipates leaving spotty foam in the center of the glass, with a layer around the rim. Little lacing. Fizzes like soda as the head dissipates.

Taste: Clove, banana and orange citrus, pepper spice. Complex malt flavor. No alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Mild carbonation. Light to medium body. Mildly drying. A bit creamy.

Overall: Complex. Bold enough. Extra smooth. Just had the Westmalle for the first time earlier this week, which is of course superior to this also impressive brew.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into a tulip glass. Or dirty old sock. Tastes and smells like pure bliss, either way! Just kidding, of course. I do have an actual review, please read on. But whether or not you like this beer, if you have any sense of humor at all, please visit the Unibroue website and view the videos of the "legends" of this and other Unibroue beers. The sommelier has been chosen directly from Quebecois Central Casting and is an absolute delight to watch and listen to.

My review:

A: slightly cloudy honey with an initial thick head (or "collar", per the sommelier) which dissipates into lace which lingers for a long time.

S: wheat, malt, a hint of the high ABV

T: pepper, wheat, honey. a hint of cloves, coriander.

M: delightfully effervescent for the duration; this is when you really get the hit of alcohol. Malty, full, comforting. As my friend and I are fond of saying, "it tastes like liquid wheat".

O: excellent. The only possible knock I can place on this is the high ABV. It is so highly drinkable that it's easy to overdo it. I guess that's why they sell the 12-oz bottles in 4-packs only :-)

I tried this beer once several years ago on a whim, just to try something different (I was amused at the name and graphic depiction of Quebec). At the time, I thought, "this is the best beer I've ever tasted". I have tasted many fine beers since that time, always thinking I'd find something better. I haven't yet, but I have held off a few points on the off chance that I will, someday. But if I don't, I'll still die happy.
