Poured from bottle into chalice, a very dark brown, almost opaque. Tanish, almost brown, foamy head which is well retained.
Smell is very complex, being both sweet and spicy. Most noticeable would be a clove-like spice followed by a dark fruity scent. Not as malty on the nose as one would expect but its there.
Taste is just as complex as the nose. The dark color would suggest a roasted malt character but it is well hidden behind the spice. Certainly a whole lot going on with each sip. Up front the spice and yeast flavors make themselves known but are quickly followed by sweet fruity flavors.
At 10.5% abv, one would think the alcohol could be more easily detected on this. Certainly it is there, but could not really be detected until the beer warms a bit. Given a chance to sit, the alcohol provides a nice warmth to round out the flavor.
The body on this doesn't feel as heavy as it looks but its certainly not light. Overall its a very enjoyable feel, almost perfect for an after dinner drink.
Unibroue is known for quality Belgian style brews and this one is no exception. Simply outstanding.
