This was one of the very first craft beers I tried back when I was still largely ignorant of the majesty of the marvelous world of craft beer. I thus didn't yet possess the proper palate to fully appreciate something like this back then... but I've now been acclimated and I'm ready... for Don De Dieu revisited. I don't even remember how I drank it the first time... probably wrongly. Never fear, though... this time I did right and drank at cellar temperature out of my good old snifter.
A very effervescent and evanescent white head and a moderately hazy straw-gold color. Lookin' golden. Lookin' good. As I made my way through the bottle, it became contradictorily clear that this is one of those beers that gets progressively hazier as you get closer to the bottom.
It smells of green apples, sweet, doughy yeast, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. QIUTE nice.
All those things in the bouquet? Pretty much describes the taste as well. Ah yeah, I'm enjoying this. The tart green apples and the sweet doughiness are coming through especially. Those spices are subtle, yet apparent throughout every sip.
As one would expect, the carbonation is appropriately cranked up for a Belgian ale.
It was a good idea to revisit this one. I definitely didn't enjoy it this much the first time. A highly recommendable Belgian strong golden ale!

Appearance - Pours an amber gold with three fingers of fluffy white head.
Smell - Standard Unibroue yeast (banana, clove, peppery spice), spicy hops, biscuity malt.
Taste - Spicy hops, spicy & peppery Belgian yeast with banana and clove accents. Touch of biscuity malts and fruity esters. ABV is well hidden.
Mouthfeel - Smooth, medium bodied with a moderate/high level of carbonation.
Overall - A well-crafted Belgian Strong Pale Ale by Unibroue. Excellent spicy flavours coming from the hops and yeast. Doesn't drink like a 9%. Unibroue always knows how to deliver a great Belgian brew.
