Poured from a bottle into a Duvel tulip. Quickly fading head leaves a crema style covering with no lacing. The beer is honey in color with bubbles rising constantly. Opaque but no sediment.
The smell is ripened fruit, yeast and spices. No hops to speak of. The taste is far more interesting and obvious. It's sweet but not cloyingly so. Some bubble gum from the yeast and spices are present. Ripe fruit and bananas are there as well. The alcohol is well hidden. Overall, a delicious beer, one I will definitely come back to. I expect to get different characteristics with each beer I drink due to its complexity. I'm not even trying to completely figure this one out after only 2 beers. The folks at Unibroue are beating the Belgians at their own game. Actually, that's too strong a statement for a newbie like me to make, but they do make great "Belgian beers" and I love this one.
The mouthfeel is not too thin or heavy and the carbonation is tingly and refreshing. Way too drinkable for 9% ABV; I could get in trouble with this beer.
What a delicious beer. I am falling in love with Belgian style beers and I love everything I've tried from Unibroue.
