750ml
Caged/Corked
Bottled In: 2011
Best Before: 12-12-2016

Poured into a chalice a nice dark grape color, nice carbonation, with a little fizzy off-white head, with very minimal sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with some nice yeast notes, plums, figs, grapes, and raisins. The taste is very nice, malty, yeasty, with lots of dark fruit goodness. The ABV is hidden very well with this brew. Medium body. Overall another very nice brew from Unibroue.

750ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $9.95

Appearance - Hazy brown colour with a large size beige coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, caramel, dark fruits, clove, apples, an earthiness

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, and dark fruits. There is also a bit of vanilla, apple, and a yeasty spiciness. I can also pick up on the oak and a bit of a burnt/charred flavour.

Overall - Really complex and something that is pretty different from the other beers in the Unibroue lineup. I have a few bottles tucked away and can't wait to see how they taste aged.

Bottle 2011-103402

This pours a raisiny cloudy color with tan cocoa foam. The aroma has a hint of vanilla and stone fruit along with a buttery note and a hint of tobacco.

It tastes smoothly mellow, giving off hints of stone fruit, raisin, and a leathery vanillin whisper. It’s smooth, mellow, sweet and pleasing. It hides the ABV well.

750 ml bottle from LCBO purchased for $12.95 CDN. Served cool after a long inventory count on a Saturday the day after receiving good news on my final accounting exam. Time to dig into the good stuff.

Appearance - Murky, auburn beer. 2 fingers of head dissipating to a half finger of lingering foam. Some significant bubbles within the beer. the head gives the illusion of bubbles exploding upwards.

Smell 0 Belgian yeasts, wide range of fruits. Some dark fruits namely plum, but also some pear and sweet apple aromas. Hints of floral arrangements and some booziness, although not enough to suspect 10% ABV.

Taste - Quite delicious, fruit doesn't come through as much as on the nose. Traces of sweetness between the light fruit taste and some butterscotch blended in as well. Boozy finish and is a great melting pot of all things sweet and delicious. Don't get me wrong though still certainly enough bite to moderate the level of sweetness thanks to the hops.

Mouthfeel - Wonderfully smooth, but because of the higher carbonation it has an explosive feel to it. Very lively. Moderately dry finish and tremendous warmth in the back of the throat. That's when you realize the 10% ABV.

Overall - A wonderful Belgian style Ale, and has a chance of being my second favorite Unibroue product ever (behind Le Fin Du Monde). Delicious and eminently quaffable despite the high ABV, highly recommended. The downside to this may be the price as there are similar quality beers (albeit different) available for cheaper.
