On tap at Mad Mex
Appearance: Dark brown with a mahogany tent when put up to the light. One finger tan head
Smell: A bouquet of fruity hops with almost no dark malts to speak of. Would not have guessed this was a black ipa by the nose. Great aromas nonetheless
Taste: Tropical hops upfront that fades into a nice balance of light roasted malts
Mouthfeel: Medium body; Smooth with slight bitterness. But the carbonation is a bit too prickly
Overall: I've had a few black ipas in my day, and this is probably my favorite so far. Great nose and good balance between hops and dark malts in the flavor. I rarely say anything negative about Lagunitas, and this is very much the same. The only gripe I have is that it's too carbonated, but that's a small one. Great brew and highly recommended for the style. Cheers!

In the absence of light this has a deep, dark brown appearance. With bright light this has a deep ruby red color that darkens on the edges. Poured with a short, light beige foam that reduced to a thin cap that left sheets of sticky lacings on the glass. Dank, ripe citrus hop aromas along with earthy, grainy, roasted malt and fresh, resinous pine hop notes at the end. Full bodied, smooth creamy body up front that, resinous feel through the middle, and tangy, tight, carbonation from the middle to the end. Roasted malt and tropical citrus hop flavors up front with the hop flavor expanding into the middle. Pine hop flavors are introduced in the middle overtop the sturdy roasted malt backbone and slowly expand from the middle to the end. Finished cleanly with a lingering roasted malt and bitter hop aftertaste. Complex and enjoyable.
