A: poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass, dark red-orange brown with a nice light tan head that dissipates leaving some lacing, clear

S: very floral and hoppy, pine, heavy hops on the nose, slight toasty malt

T: fragrant bitter hops, pine and grapefruit peel, swaps to a sweet malt profile mid palate, end bitter slightly but not too intense, slight coffee flavor, vanilla

M: slick, lower carbonation

O: nice balance of malt and hops, coffee flavor plays well with bitter hops

This is delicious. I'm not incredibly familiar with black ales, but if this is any testament to what they can bring taste wise, than I will have to begin going on the hunt for more of them. Poured into a snifter that had been chilled. Bottled on 2015/01/21

L - Dark, jet black. A solid 2.5 finger head that is to color of milk chocolate, subsides gradually and the lacing is covering the entire glass. The big bubbles that reside on the middle-outside collect while tiny foam compiles towars the center. Interesting

S - The smell is so fresh, so clean. Almost like a smokey IPA with bits of bacon and firewood. This is basically the smell that would blend in with clothes that you have worn after a camping trip, mixed with fresh hops. Delicious.

T - Wow. Not what I expected at all. With this kind of color paired with the smell, it's like a smokey IPA that has a burnt taste. The burnt is good though, delicious in it's own unique way. Very unique.

F - Carbonated, but collects on the back of the tongue desiring more to wash it down. I enjoyed it.

O - I will absolutely pick up another 6er for $10.99 and look forward to the next time this is released!

Nice smokey flavor. Would sleep with this beer if I could. Instead I drink it, like the dirty whore it is.

Appearance: Deep black with minimal ruby highlights. I get a thick, frothy head of tan bubbles, and gorgeous, detailed, frilly lacing. Superlative!

Aroma: Delicious hops — floral, pine and tropical fruit galore. A bouquet of hop manna!

Taste: Rich and decadent melding of roasty malts and twangy bittering hops. The pair duke it out on the palate, with neither coming out ahead. Operative word here is balanced. Tons of flavor from both sides, with chocolatey malt goodness mixing it up with lovely hoppiness. This heavy brew (at 7.9%) is so easy to drink, I could easily enjoy another right away. Delicious? You bet. A real winner here from Lagunitas.

Holding a bottle in my hand right now. Abv clearly states 7.9%. Not the 8.2 as advertised. For the taste and body I was hoping for more alcohol. Alas, it will pass

Had this since spring but couldn't find a good time to crack it. Finally a cold rainy nasty day... well night.

Porus a darker colored creamy frothy 1 finger head that fades pretty slowly, decent lined lacing, nice frothy head and lacing, super dark beer with a bit of murky brown light sneaking through.

Nose is very strong, aromates the room, yes that's a new word... big hops, not as spicy piney as I expected though, more floral and fruity, some orange peel citrus, little tangerine even, mild earthy piney notes that are more background, and touches of a tropical fruit note. Then into dark malts, a little roast and cocoa, fluffy nougat, little caramel, some nice candy bar notes, and a little chocolate covered orange. The aromas clash a bit but blend better than I expected for this style. Just a touch of booze.

Taste starts with creamy malts, rich dark malts that quickly flash into booze, strong alcoholic and slight phenolic booze, much stronger than I expected. getting through that I get into hops again, lots of floral grassy hops out front, but then into a big bitter pithy rindy, a little citrus note but big spicy bitterness like I bit into orange rind covered in spicy hop pellets. Super bitterness cuts in, astringent and mouth numbing bitterness, I guess which is why I should fear the dark? The smooth creamy malts come back with a creamy and fluffy nougat, a little cocoa and roast, bitter acrid roast with the super bitter astringent hops bring this no-mans-land feel in my mouth. Finish brings more orange, big orange peel and zest, with some phenolic booze again, quite bitter but doesn't smash the mouth with bitterness as I expected, it's actually a bit less bitter than the back end of the taste, and a little sticky dark malt lingering.

Mouth is a bit thin feeling despite a bit creamy and fluffy, it's weird, although quite a bit of carbonation, perhaps too much it's a bit distracting, and phenolic warming booze.

Overall mixed bag and kinda meh, hard to drink this for sure, between the huge bitterness of the astringent rindy hops and the acrid roasted malt (which isn't very strong but it's there), and the phenolic booze kick in the pants, and the thin feel, those unhappy flavors way outnumber the decent ones. Nose was pretty nice though.

A: [3.00] Dark color (like Coke when poured). Also pours a head similar to Coke. Large bubbles in the 2+ finger head. The head is khaki colored. The head recedes slowly leaving patchy lacing. The bottle has a born on date (Julian date = May 14)

S: [3.75] Really nice smell. Has the smell of fruits. I want to say tropical fruits but my eyes say dark fruits and my nose says tropical fruits.

T: [3.75] Slightly bitter on the front. Moves through some tropical flavors and sweetness and finishes with a sweet coffee taste.

M: [3.25] Slightly dry and tight. There is no biting in the carbonation it is the right level.

O: [3.50] This is a 8.2% beer but there is no taste or sense of alcohol. The 65 IBUs gives a little bitter on the tip of the tongue - but doesn't make the beer harsh. The smell and taste are nice. This is not just a dark colored IPA. There are some stout-esque characters on the finish like the hint of sweet coffee.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a goblet.

Pours jet black/"nighttime". Good head retention and lacing.

Very strong piney, hoppy aroma. Also, hints of smoke.

Hop flavors pronounced up front followed by roasted malt and subtle smoke. Slight bitterness on finish. The flavors really pop as is it warms!

Overall a great representation of style. Hops and roasted malt that get better with each sip. The smokiness sets it apart from other black IPAs, but I think it gets in the way of the great hops and roasted malt. Still a great beer and worth enjoying!

Black as night; Off White, creamy and toasted looking head.

Smells of orange and grapefruit, slight hint of chocolate.

Hop forward, aggressive, but not too aggressive. Orange and grapefruit bear the most flavor, with a hint of mint strangely at the end. Very slight hint of chocolate -maybe- after second drink.

Feels very creamy in the mouth, with the hops bitterly spraying your taste buds. It is literally Yin and Yang in beer form.

Great beer, but I feel that Dubhe takes the competition by storm, as I feel Dubhe has more complexities, character and flavor to it.

Served in taster and later from growler into mug. 8.2% ABV; 62 IBU
It pours dark with tame head - not black as a stout or porter but not a brown ale either. Looks ah-ight.
The smell is incredible with burnt pineapple, over-ripe mango, and cotton candy.
I could inhale this all day er, night. Ends with a little biscuity whiff.

The taste is sweet then dry then bitter with lingering spiciness and tongue tingling.

You might not guess its a black IPA from the taste ifyou didn't see it first - but then at the end there is a bit of a nice cocoa malt flavor at the end.

Its very smooth with small bubbles mingling with the bitter malty spiciness.

As close to waldo as you'll get in a bottle.

Black, but not pitch black, choppy tan head with plenty of lacing. Rich smells of earthy pines, nuts and dark fruits. Taste follows smells, flavors of raisin with a sweet lingering nutty finish. On the sweet bubbly side, some roastiness, but nothing dense, it stays light thoughout. Dangerously drinkable.with enough head stuck to the glass to have it for tomorrow's lunch.

I would consider it to be a black IPA, regardless very enjoyable

Pours into an imperial pint glass a deep cola color with a half finger beige head that leaves a nice full ring of lace as it settles into a frothy mass. Some pine resin and earthiness in the nose, not much sweetness to be had.Pretty dry on the palate with mild roast and earthy with some pine and grapefruit hops lingering in the finish,I like the dryness.A good example of the style not uber hopped but hopped enough.Iam still warming up to the style,I like robust porters and I love IPA's but still have not found an ABA that I go crazy for ...yet.

Pours a deep ebony color with a tan head that leaves chunks of lacing.

Smells of roasted malts with some citrus and tropical hops.

A slightly acrid burnt note leads into tropical and citrus hop notes that play nicely together (think grilled pineapple). Hops fade into a roasted bitterness before a fairly clean finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-full with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is tasty and worth checking out.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a big pillowy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is acidic roast chocolate malt with fruity piney hops and a little smoke.

The flavor is sweet roasted acidic chocolate malts with some fruity piney hops and a bit of an ashy bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, I'm liking this years version better than last year. Less sweet with more going on.

Heavy 4 finger-head. Dark nearly pitch black. Khaki head. Smells fresh fruit, chocolate and plum. Taste is nice, effervescent pine, apricot, milk chocolate, slightly dry finish. Medium body. Overall, fresh this one will go down smooth. Pair with duck burger, ostrich burger, or nut-crusted/herb-crusted goat cheese.

Reasonably priced (as usual) Lagunitas bomber. No freshness info that I can find.

Pours very dark brown, medium khaki moderate head, small bubble film and respectable fine mini fields of stick.

Roasted malt nose with some citric hops also present.

Orange hop notes/chocolate/ dark caramel malt sums this one up for me.

Tasty. Go get some. I think this one would go well with a nice steak or with a chocolate dessert.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Dark reddish-brown with foamy, creamy head that leaves lots of clinging lace.

Smell: Typical Lagunitas aroma with crazy grapefruit and tropical notes which are sweet, tart and dry at the same time. Also, some roast and chocolate notes.

Taste: Borderline insane mix of grapefruit, orange, mango, chocolate, molasses and char. The finish is spicy and piney, and a little bit bitter.

Feel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation. Fairly smooth and creamy. Not as dry as I would prefer.

Overall: There is no question that this is the Lagunitas version of an American Black Ale. This delivered the exact crazy mix that I expected, and I am very happy about that.

Light black in color with and I can just see through it when I hold it up to light. A half inch thick tightly knit beige head sits on top. Brussels lacing.Light aroma of piney hops is present, but is definitely on the fainter end compared to other black IPAs. The flavor is strongly of piney hops and that very familiar hop flavor common to Lagunitas. The mouth is silky smooth and light considering the ABV.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Lagunitas Mason Jar glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big three finger light tan head which slowly fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing clinging to the glass.

Smell: A juicy, dank, and roasty black IPA aroma with lots of earthy and citrus hops and a solid presence of dark malt. Citrus hop hints of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, mango, pineapple, and tangerine. Earthy, floral, spicy, and herbal hop presence with weed like hints of pine resin and grass. Solid presence of dark roasted malt with hints of chocolate, coffee, burnt toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, grains, and yeast. Hop forward but not completely unbalanced. A very solid aroma.

Taste: Like the smell, a very juicy and dank hop forward black ale taste with good notes of citrus, pine, and dark malt. Citrus hops with fruity notes of grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple, mango, lemon, and tangerine. Dank and spicy taste of pine resin along with earthy notes of grassy hops. Solid backing presence of bready dark roasted malt with notes of biscuit, chocolate, coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, grains, yeast, and slight smoke. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very juicy, oily, chewy, and fairly creamy. Finishes dry with a slightly smokey aftertaste. Alcohol feel is pretty tame.

Overall: A very good West Coast take on a Black Ale. Huge juicy hop presence with a solid kick of dark malt. Hop forward for sure but the dark roast doesn't go unnoticed.

Dark brown and opaque with an inch high head of oatmeal colored foam that lingers long. Low aroma of dark malt and floral hops. Flavors of darky toasted malt, root beer, caramel, leather. Subtle hops come along for the ride, this is tasty and well balanced beer. Moderate mouthfeel, even and full, some carbonation tingles.

Poured into a 34oz mug; jet black with a huge fluffy tan head that stays forever until it slowly breaks apart at a glacial pace into chunky crags of foam in the center of thick, chunky lacing.
Smells of pine, tropical and citrus fruit, and dark bready malt with hints of cocoa.
Taste follows nose; semi-sweet dark malt, bready and toasted with fruity and piney hops on top. Nice use of tropical fruit hops instead of the usual pine-bombs hoppy black ales usually are.
Mouthfeel is smooth, medium-bodied and wet.
Overall, one of the best black ales I've had. Hoppy and fruity, dark and malty, perfectly balanced. Wouldn't expect much less from Lagunitas.

Gave it a chance because I was looking for something new. Admittedly not a fan of Lagunitas in general but it being dark prompted me to try it. It tasted a lot like everything else Lagunitas puts out.
