A - Pours very near black with a dense but light/fluffy looking dark mocha head. Fantastic retention and perfect lacing. A beauty
S - Grapefruit/lemon citrusy explosion with a bit of roasty malts, seemingly very light/dry from what i can tell thus far.
T - Initially a little chocolatey sweet, minimally roasty, citrusy hops quickly throw themselves to the forefront, finish is a dry bitterness with a hint of roast. Aftertaste is mostly citrusy hop bitterness.
M - Medium bodied or less, superbly drinkable. Incredibly smooth on the tongue, decently carbonated.
O - Easily a top 3 black ipa for me. A lot of times i feel the ipa qualities are trying to be "louder" than the porter like qualities, that is not the case here. Wish i had this blind for the first time. Mouthfeel is amazing

A - Very dark brown, almost black, tan fair sized head. Lots and lots of cling.
S - Stringent, bittery rye. Nice.
T - Big malt, nice bitter and rye.
M - Medium body, good carb, good balance.
D - Kinda big, but a fun beer. This one should be shared.

This reveiw is based on a goblet quaffed at Rustico Ballston (VA) in June 2014. Once poured into the goblet, it appears a dark ruby color, one impervious to light. There is minimal head with few splotches of lacing along the sides. There is a subtle plum nose amidst; the palate is tickled with traces of licorice (and more plum) that are subsequentyl thrown asunder with loud blasts of brown sugar.
The balnce is effective in that ot coordinates the semi-sweet coca structure with a nice inlay of malt. There is a chalky and dry finish that requires a sip of water.
A heavy beer with a potent hop-malt-licorice ratio and an intriguing new entry to the wonderful world of the black IPA.
