A light amber color with a smooth full off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is obvious cat piss hops and some bready malt, but this is happily an obvious hop brew. The flavor is just as the aroma advertises, a beautiful grapefruit hop blended carefully with a bready sweetness that hints at malt and cotton candy. It's a touch aqueous but nicely carbonated. Very drinkable, refreshing and a great surprise as a pale ale. I can't believe the ratings aren't higher here on BA. I was so happily surprised by the personality, the hops, for a PA, but maybe most folks don't want that. It is more like a light IPA perhaps, which suits me just fine. Very nice and oh so sessionable!!

(From notes)

A - Poured with a nice frothy looking pure white head with pretty decent retention. Lacing was lacking just a tad, no biggie to me though

S - Citrusy hop aromas; light sweet maltiness...pretty much all that I picked up. Bit candy-like in the sweetness

T - Hops shine through, and are very citrus-like. Decent malt back, but not too heavy which is pretty nice

M - Thinner to medium with good carbonation presence, but verged on a little watery toward the end

D- Good, no off-flavors, and was a solid take on the style.

Overall, not a bad APA, but I wouldn't rush to but it again.

Appearance: Poured with a foamy off white head that dissipated to a thin layer leaving a nice lacing down my glass. The beer is clear with a yellow-orange gold color.

Smell: Citrus hops, light sweet fruity character, sweet caramel malt, hint of pine, refreshing grassy smell.

Taste: Nice piney and grassy hops, sweet citrus, honey, and somewhat resembles iced tea (unsweetened)

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nice bitter tingle on the tongue, good amount of carbonation, slightly syrupy/sticky, and a nice refreshing feel at the end.

Overall: Great drinkiability, nice subtle flavors, great hop character, nicely balanced by a fruity/honey sweetness, pretty refreshing.

Poured a weak golden hue into a standard pint glass. Leaves far less head than I had hoped. There is a good amount of white lacing on the glass though. Smells citrusey, like grapefruit. Tastes the same way with a bit of caramel supporting the dominate hop flavors. It is bitter, like a lot of APAs, but its not overpoweringly so. A fairly balanced beer and a good take on a broad style. It has a very similar (although smaller) flavor profile to their Hop Stoopid IPA.

I had this one on tap at Risqué BBQ in Chicago. Served in a standard pint, the beer is copper with a chill haze and an off-white head.

Nice nose of pine, caramel and grains.

Well hopped, its bitter and refreshing. The beer has both citrus and pine notes. Could pass for an IPA for many brewers. Nice malt backbone adds balance and a trace of sweetness.

The mouth is pleasantly oily and coating. Great session beer and a good example of the new style APA.

On tap at EOU Faculty Lounge in La Grande.

Golden Orange body under small white head, but with nice lacing. Floral aroma of hops in the nose with some malty sweetness. A very nice balance of hops, bread, and enough sweetness to make this a rather drinkable brew. Not much in the way of mouthfeel, but quite tasty and drinkable. Frankly, I prefer this to their primary IPA as I think this has more of a hop presence and better balance.

I gotta say I love the beers from Lagunitas and this one is no exception. Pours a nice dark amber color. Aroma is full of pine, light grapefruit, fruity and some caramel. Fruity in the taste with light citrus and sweet in the middle but ends up nicely with the perfect amount of bitterness when it ends. Very drinakble and a good default pale ale to go to. Another good beer from a great brewery.

I decided to give this brand a shot yesterday and I'm pleased with my choice.
A: Nice light copper color with a good head on the beer as well.
S: Flowery, more so in my opinion than an IPA.
T: Stronger hops than most APA's that I've had in the past, but very good. The finish is not overpowering at all. Great flavor and smooth on the end.
D: Easy session beer or just to relax with on a nice warm day. Very refreshing.
Over all I really like this brew and definitely recommend it to anyone to give it a shot.

Appearance: Gold, lots of particles, good head.

Smell: Hits first with a blast of pine, then more citrusy.

Taste: Nice dry citrus, pithy grapefruit. Feels a little light on body but that's fine for an APA.

Drinkability: Nice quaffable pale ale, good for a nice hop kick without being too strong.

This is a pretty good pale ale, on the bitter side and not too heavy so could be sessionable. Seems like it would be a good summer beer.

Reviewed 3/1/2007 (12oz bottle):

Pours a big off-yellow head, quickly diminishing. Clearish brown yellow body, average. Sweet aroma, but unlike typical maltiness. More of a sweet candy sugar aroma. Inhaling & swirling brings out some dry hop aroma. Malty, somewhat tempered by the hops taste. Hoppy sweet, but not too dry aftertaste.

pours a clear marigold hue with a buttercream colored two finger bubbly and porous head that quickly fades to a half finger that just won't leave. eventually it dissipates leaving some sticky lacing.

aroma is citrus hops with a bit of citrus hopping. And a touch more citrus hops just to shake things up. There may be a hint of pale malt in there, and probably a bit of pine hopping, but on the whole, smells like a white grapefruit.

taste is grapefruit up front, giving way to a bit of orange, a bit of pine, and some biscuit malt is hidden in there as well. citrus dominates the bitter hopping, entirely void of any floral notes. The caramel and biscuit malting comes through lightly, enough to prevent it from being a complete hop bomb. a clean bitter pine finish is pleasant.

moutfeel is great, with ample carbonation and a smooth feel. A bit on the thick and syrupy side for an APA, but the carbonation and bitterness makes it work. Not overly sweet or sticky... a decent brew.

All in all, deliciously grapefruity. Seems almost too hoppy for the style, and the aroma is so overtly grapefruit that it's hard to figure out what's really going on. If you like hops of the citrus variety, this brew's for you. If you like a solid balanced pale, this ain't it. For what it is, it's great... for the style, it's okay. Know what you're getting into and it's delicious.

Thanks goes out to jwc215 for this one.

Pours a very nice clean/clear dark golden yellow color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger white creamy head, with some nice sticky lacing left behind. The nose is hoppy, with some malt notes, citrus, and pines. The taste is hoppy, slight malt, nice notes of citrus/pines, nice bitterness. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a very nice American Pale Ale, way to go Lagunitas.

Pours a light amber with a large white head that had some staying power. The head eventually settles to a thick cap. Heavy lacing is left on the glass. The aroma is full of citrus hops. Hints of grapefruit and orange. The malt is barely detectable. The flavor as well is dominated by the hops. It needed a little more influence from the malt to balance better. Bitterness however is still relatively mild. A lighter body with low carbonation lends a nice texture. A nice APA but it could be better balanced. It does give nice hop flavors but still keeping bitterness in check.

Pours bright orange amber with a thin off-white head that stays.

The smell is of pine, orange and grapefruit. It has a biscuity, caramelly backing. It is on the mild side, but what's there is very good.

The taste is of orange, grapefruit and piney notes. Nicely hopped with a firm, biscuity/caramel sweetness backing it up. By the end, the sweetness gives way to a bittering, dry finish. Hoppy - doesn't quite make it to IPA, but as an APA, it's not intended to. On the hoppy side for the style, and nicely done.

It has a pretty chewy, medium, smooth body.

Very drinkable (though abv - which is well-hidden - rings in at 6.4%).

Pours full amber with a good-sized cream color head. Lots of ring lacings.
Aroma is big floral hops.
Taste is medium grapefruit orange resious hops with agood amount of malt backing. Overall a bit on the sweet side. A little bready as well. Nice bitter finish.
Mouthfeel is good for the style.
Overall an easy drinker. Would guess the abv at 5.5%.

This beer pours a clear golden color. The head is half an inch in height, and recedes quickly into sparse lacing. The aroma is of pine resin and rotten grapefruit. It is quite unpleasant. The taste is all rotten grapefruit, and very hard to stomach. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with nice carbonation. Overall, this beer is just plane bad. I don't think it is infected, but I have a hard time believing this is the way someone wanted it to taste.

This beer is a clean, light amber with a big head and nice lacing. Smells like grapefruits and pineapples with some caramel malt as well. Taste is very hoppy with a good, caramel sweetness for balance. Bitterness is there but not aggressive. The carbonation level was on the low end of medium and the body was slighty oily. Overall a really good APA that could be considered an IPA do to its strength and hoppy character. Rocemmended.

A - Dark, almost pumpkin ornage in color. Thin bubbly off-white head. Average retention but good lacing.

S - Strong torpical hop aroma. Pineapple, a little mango, and a little grapefruit. Fait sweetness back up the hoppiness.

T - Light pale malt sweetness up front quickly overcome by a fruity citrus blast. More of the citrus fruit flavor comes through than there was in the nose. Lots of grapefruit, a little lemon, and still some hints of pineapple. There is an earthy component in the finish that isnt that great.

M/D - Medium bodied and rather dry. A good APA, but not a great one. Defeinitely a good session beer.

I picked this up at the Westover Market in Arlington, VA.

Appearance: copper with a nice 3/4" off-white head

Smell: hoppy and piney
Taste: hoppy, some biscuit flavor
Mouthfeel: medium body
Drinkability: could do two in a night...hops are a little strong..so three may be a little too much

Overall, a very good beer...im becoming very reliant on west coast beers.

This is an ok, very standard, boring West Coast pale ale, but better than some.

It's light copper with a red-brown hint, smallish off-white head slowly shrinking to a thin top and some decent lace.

The aroma is standard, boring grapefruit and crackers with just some hints of bread and caramel to be a little more interesting.

The taste is similar, mostly just boring grapefruit pulp and crackers with the barest hints of caramel, bread, and juice. It's somewhat bland, very simple, utterly uninteresting, and has too much grapefruit-pulp bitterness.

Light amber, nice thick eggshell head and light lacing. Light powdery citric hop aromas with caramel malt undertones. Nice pine and citrus hops smack the tongue upfront. Not expecting this from subdued aromas. Malts come thru in the middle. Some pineapple tropical fruit flavors left behind. Really nice easy drinking American pale ale that packs enough flavor to consider. Good stuff.

A - Poured a golden color with an off white head that leaves lacing

S - Is of piney hops with some sweet malt

T - The bitter hops are the main flavor the malt doesn't come through very much

M - This is a medium bodied beer with medium carbonation

D - This beer is pretty easy to drink the taste isn't bad I just would have like the malt to balance it out a little more its still worth a try

Woof, woof! Lagunitas is fairly new to the Triangle region of North Carolina, having shown up here within the past two months. A local distributor provided a six-pack for my co-worker and I for trial purposes. I must say, I'm glad he did. Pale ales are not a style I seek out, and I may well have missed this fine brew.

It pours a light amber with bright yellow highlights, with a short-lived, eggshell-white head. The smell is tilted towards the hop side, but a bit of malt and sweet citrus is certainly noticeable. Citrus and tropical fruit attack the taste buds on the first gulp. Malts are mild in the center, and then the bitter, bitter hops dominates the finish. It's a very dry pale ale, literally making me smack my chops after swallowing. Big in flavor, low in presence.

This is quite a powerful pale ale, and the fruit flavors are a nice touch. Worth trying.
