Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with no dating that I can seem to find anywhere on the bottle or label. Poured into the IPA-specific Speigelau glass in order to coax out the characteristics to the max(imus) from this beer. [rimshot]
Appearance - Pours a a beautifully complex color that is a mix of several different hues--dark copper and brown in the shaded parts, but with a bright tangelo glow where the light passes through the glass, and even some hints of sunny yellow. Head is made up of two fingers of off-white foam that retains for a bit before dissipating and leaving a shallow curtain of lace around the sides of the glass. A lazy stream of carbonation bubbles rises up to the top from the laser etching on the bottom of the glass to replenish the foam.
Smell - Pleasant blend of herbal pine and sweet resin alongside some fragrant notes of light grapefruit and floral orange blossom. I wouldn't describe it as pungent or really powerful, as you might expect from some in the style, but it also lacks that astringency that some DIPAs will have, which is a good thing, imho.
Taste - Delivering on the prelude of the smell, notes of pine and honeycomb hit the tongue initially, followed by aftertaste of bright citrus zest and floral sweetness, reminding me of nectar, but not overpoweringly sweet in any way. The taste also allows a lightly toasted biscuity characteristics to come through where I didn't detect it in the aroma.
Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light bodied and moderate carbonation. Light bitterness and a semi-dry finish.
Overall, a well-done take on a double IPA that calls to mind the famed PtE, given it's balance and an ABV level that doesn't smack you across the face. Certainly don't go into this one expecting a substitute, but it's a nice, unassuming DIPA that would be easy to sit back and have a few (or a bomber) on a pleasant weather day. I could also see it pairing with food rather easily. Perhaps it could be called a "starter" Double IPA, if such a thing exists.

Could not resist to put my teeth in this DIPA, especially since Lagunitas IPA is world class. The beer has a very fine copper color and relinquishes some residue on the glass. The aroma is wonderfully strong. The taste is pretty easy for being an American "hop bomb".
A very easy to drink DIPA. The medium bitterness is perfect and the beer would also have been if it were not for the chemical off-taste in the finish.
