A maltier IPA. That's what I think upon first drink. However, I enjoy this type of IPA as long as the sweetness from the heavy malt doesn't overpower. Maximus ticks that box. In fact the hop profile is nice on this beer. A bit of spicy hops! Its a nice combo. What's also nice is the price.

Bought a $3.99 22 oz! Lots of malt, but thats what you'd expect from a double, almost hints at being a barley wine but more refreshing. Good choice of hops for this style, pretty standard for Lagunitas though. A good standard, double IPA. With a nice smooth malt that hides the alcohol. Smoooth!

For my pesos, this should be the DIPA standard.

A nice balance of citrusy pine coupled with a decent malt backing. Not overpowering strong with the alchohol but enough to let you know that you're drankin' a DIPA.

Sturdy DIPA.

Six pack 12 oz. beer. Poured in my tall beer glass.
Alcohol content: 8.2%

A rich light copper color with high transparency. Plenty of foam, if desired, on a hard pour, and lacing is strong on the side of the glass.

Crisp, clean and citrus with soft notes of grapefruit, malt and an ale-like alcohol.

Lots of carbonation of both large, medium and small bubbles. Yes, carb has many facets and dimensions and this beer has them with an excellent range of carbonation and suds. Viscosity is perfect for an IPA. Not thin like a Pilsner, nor thick like a Porter. Refreshing but creamy with all those hops and malt.

LAGUNITAS MAXIMUS walks that tight rope between hops and malt and does it so well. I find the some IPA's that are in the so called west-coast style, are too heavily biased towards citrus and become too astringent for my taste. Those beers such as Palate Wrecker by Green Flash are too heavily biased towards the fruit stand and for me, one-dimensional. Not sure why they called it MAXIMUS as it doesn't come across to me as an overtly citrus or pucker your mouth grapefruit IPA. I like it for NOT doing that.

I prefer the style of IPA's such as Two Hearted by Bells, Centennial by Founders and Breckenridge Brewing Special Edition 471 as striking that ideal balance (for me) between citrus and biscuit. I also like a slight alcohol finish. After all I am drinking a BEER and not some nancy-boy's Coors!

The LAGUNITAS MAXIMUS strikes that ideal balance of malt, hops, complex IPA notes of citrus and biscuit with a terrific mouthfeel and refreshing carbonation in a superb IPA.

For me, it's been a great find, and its now on my list of reference IPA's.

Beautifiul color. Frothy and sticky head. Very heavy hoppy aroma. Very bitter, hoppy, piny, grassy. Quite earthy for an ipa. The aftertaste is just as good as the initial flavor. Magnificent. Another fantastic ipa from Lagunitas. Top notch and exactaly what I expect from them. Will buy again.

12 oz. bottle

Everything I've had from Lagunitas has been solid and this is no exception. Signature funky Lagunitas taste, with a good balance of hops, malt, bitter, balance, etc. Great price point, too. Lagunitas has to be the best value in the beer aisle.

Poured into one of my standard pint glasses. Beautiful golden-copper color with a thinner head that lasted throughout the duration of the drinking experience. Malty goodness with a hop explosion ensues upon tasting the great Maximus, although I can tolerate a some extreme hops I would consider this a rather easy to drink Imperial with an alkaline feel. Hoppy and malty smell, slightly roasted.

Glad I went back to this Imperial after so long, a must-try!

Appearance 4.25: Pours out a coppery golden color. Excellent lacing and decent (1/4") head.

Smell 4.75: Wow! Huge bouquet on this brew. Apricot, pine, pineapple upside down cake...just amazing aromas from the hop blend.

Taste 4.5: Front is all alkaline bitterness. Middle is where a huge wave of mid-sweetness malt and the 101st airborne of hop blends invades your palate and takes no prisoners. Pine, grapefruit rind, rye...just amazing flavors at this level. Finish is tangy, slightly dry and very satisfying. Finish is a delightfully malty alkaline hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel 4.0: Great mouthfeel, but a little too much on the CO2 for this style, IMHO. Also missing a certain "creamy" middle feel of the palate which so many Imperial IPAs feature.

Overall 4.5: Excellent beer and another hop masterpiece from lagunitas. Great with greasy food, but fantastic for sessioning, this monster "Imperial" (that means a high ABV, BTW) is a must have for all the hop-heads out there. Definitely worth tracking down. A certain Roman Gladiator would be proud.

A sweet orangey type citrus nose with a hint of pine. Good smelling beer. The taste follows the nose well. You immediately get hit with sweet orangey / light citrus notes. A little pine comes thru and a whole lot of sweet caramel malts. A delicious DIPA in my opinion.

Pours a nice amber color, with an ample, frothy, off white head.

smell is mostly pine and orange, with a little bite of caramel malts.

Pretty tasty IPA. As in the nose, pine and citrus are the main players here. But, they are balanced out nicely by the malts.

carbonation is near perfect, and this drinks very easily for 8+%...which will certainly sneak up on you.

Nice pour into pint glass with a medium amber color and 2 finger thick head. Nose was weak but I was outdoors, which could have affected it. Thin head remained until finished. This surprised me because it was hop and malt forward with a lingering hop finish. For some reason it had a medium oily feel.

I am an avid Lagunitas fan so I am a bit sad to mention that it took me awhile to finally try this variety. I enjoyed this beer and you should know that although it has 8.2% ABV, it drinks like a 7% ABV.

Look-It has the epitome of a copper amber color and a decent clarity. The head comes in thick yet only a finger or two deep, but quickly dissipates into a fine lacing that remains all the way down.

Smell-The smell is definitely pine, grapefruit, grassy hops, and some sea-salt mixed in there somehow. The malts are mildly sweet and show up at the end.

Taste-The taste is just like the smell, but with a stronger pine flavor and a caramel malt backbone. I also get some floral and clover notes that are very pleasant and play well with the malts and alcohol content.

Mouthfeel-The feel is zingy at first from the citrus and carbonation, but the malts produce a creamy syrup feel that isn’t overwhelming. The alcohol content is almost amplified by the perfect timing of the carbonation and citrus zest. It also leaves a pleasant resinous coating on the tongue that lingers.

Overall-It is a pleasant brew with a medium-bodied and creamy texture that is not overly sweet. I would have liked to see a little bit more variety from the hops in terms of oils and flavors, but I definitely was not disappointed.

Not very balanced and overly malty in my opinion. Would have preferred more hops out in front. Very drinkable though, and not boozy as others have mentioned. I would drink again, however not my top choice for a DIPA.

This six pack saved the day! Perfect clarity and a deep golden color. Nose is sweet, grassy, and piney. It tastes a lot like it smells. Sweet sugary malt and a zesty pine bitterness that fades back into that sweet sugar. Well carbonated and very smooth.

Poured from a bomber into a "pint" glass. Pours orange copper with a small white head. Smells of grassy and floral hops. Tastes of sweet grain with piney hops, very thick. Beer is medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Overall, an above average beer.

Overly malty, not very balanced. It is highly drinkable for the ABV though. Just not one of my favorites with all the great hoppy offerings out there.

Slightly hazy amber color with a decent creamy white head that subsides quickly but persists as a light skim and produces some nice lacing.

The aroma is pine, grapefruit and some mild malt background.

The taste is similar with lots of grapefruit and pine resin over a caramel malt background.

Medium bodied fairly smooth and decently drinkable. Alcohol content is notiecable but not overpowering.

Overall, a pretty decent brew for hop lovers.

Good looking beer, with small head. Smell is fruity, hops, pine, earthy. Taste is hops, grapefruit, tangerine, some dank earthy notes. Heavy mouthfeel. I like their regular IPA better, but this is a bold beer. Although others notice a big alcohol presence, I did not detect much. Much better than Hop Stoopid and Sucks.

From a bottle into a snifter

Dark yellow or light amber in color. 1/2 finger of thin off white foam leaving no lace on the glass

Smell is piney hops with floral notes and faint yeasty malts.

Taste is very hop forward with pine being the main flavor. With the pine are citrus and floral notes. Very crisp and clean. Flavors get deeper as beer warms to temp.

Overall an easy drinking beer. Quite mild for a DIPA. No boozyness at all.

Look: Maximus had an average appearance with light foam.
Smell: Maximus had an aroma of molasses and malt.
Taste: Maximus had a light bitter burnt taste of both hops and wheat.
Feel: Maximus had low carbonation.
Overall: Maximus had a good amount of alcohol content. People who seek a low-carbonation/high-alcohol type beer will enjoy Maximus.
I purchased a bottle of Maximus for $3.99 USD in Glendale, CA/USA.

L: Pours brilliant gold copper amber under a 1” cream colored clingy foam cap.
S: Pine forest hop aromas.
T: Attacks with a solid malt background with some traces of caramel culminating in a big citrus rind bitterness.
F: Exceptionally creamy texture, soft medium low carbonation, medium to medium high body.
O: This is a beer where big malt tangles with big hops and the result is pretty much a draw.

Pours a reddish amber with good frothy head and excellent lacing retention. Smells of pine tar and raw sugar cookies. Thick syrup like mouthfeel. On the tongue, bread dough and uncooked pasta. Mid-palate is pancake batter and some stale sugar cookies. Back palate is hop bite and skunk cabbage. A strange malt to the level of near undrinkable limits. So why the 3.75 out of 5? From a technical standpoint this is a trainwreck. From pure taste it's a WTF!? But from a creative genius and pushing the limits of what beer is: This is breakthrough in taste and mouthfeel. The bottle claims 72 IBUs... I actually think it might be around 90. I'm not sure I could drink two back to back. Be warned. This is decisive in taste and not for the unadventurous. The kim chi of beer. 3.75 out of 5.
