12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present on the bottle.

A - Pours a nice standard burnt sienna orange color with a nice fat three finger head, which may or may not have been my bad. Ring of lacing around the top of the glass.

S - Grapefruit. Citrus fruit peel. Wet juicy hops. That's about it. Smells like a big IPA.

T - Extremely bitter hop bite up front. Grapefruit, again. The 8.2% alcohol is masked expertly well. This does not taste like an imperial IPA to me at all. There is a lot more sweetness present than I thought there would be, but balanced with the bitterness nicely. Although this beer is on the older side, the hop bite hasn't diminished at all.

M - The mouthfeel is nice, not too watery, the resinous hops stick around for a minute. The little bit of warm booze taste doesn't overstay it's welcome, either.

Overall, this is a good beer, but I am not the biggest Lagunitas fan, and I personally feel that a lot of these beers taste eerily similar to another. To me, Hop Stoopid is definitely their best beer, and the Wilco Tango Foxtrot is pretty good as well, but the Lagunitas Maximus IPA is definitely worth a try if you are a fan.

Lagunitas Maximus IPA ---3.5/5.

Bottle poured into a snifter, dated Julian 312, or 11/7/12. Nice and fresh baby.

A: Very nice looking brew, pours a clear sunset orange amber, two finger egg shell head, moderate retention, good lace, some alcohol legs.

S: Sweet, juicy citrus fruits, grapefruit, pineapple. Nicely balanced with a bready, caramel malt backbone. Touch of alcohol but not anything distracting or offputting at all. Very tropical, has the adult fruit juice thing like a lot of Lagunitas beers. Also getting a very slight dank onion smell.

T: Sweet malt upfront followed by a big juicy citrus hop punch, lots of pineapple, tangerine and grapefruit, apricots, lighter piney notes. Not overly bitter, but packs a good punch and finishes dry. Lingering hoppy finish.

M: Medium feel, carbonation on the lower side and smooth. Touch of alcohol heat as it warms.

O: Very nice, easy drinking DIPA, found myself slugging this one back fairly quickly for a big beer. Heavy on the sweet tropical fruits, and nicely balanced with the toasty sweet malt, yet another solid beer from Petaluma.

Poured into an Imperial pint.

A - Nice medium sized white head packed with small tight bubbles. Good clarity to its orangish golden color. Left a nice bit of lacing on the glass.

S - Fresh citrus hops, a little tropical. Some piney smells as well. Very wet, fresh smell. Touch of graininess in the background. I can pick up some alcohol after it warms a little bit.

T - Has a solid grainy/biscuity malt backbone. Bright citrus/pine hop flavors mid-palette. Rounded impact of bitterness near the end. Finishes nice and dry. Hop flavor lasts long into the aftertaste.

M - Medium to medium-full bodied, medium carbonation, dry.

O - Great lighter look to this beer for a double IPA. Smell is fresh and bright. Malt holds up well, bitterness doesn't overwhelm nor is sharp. Perfectly dry. Great feel. Excellent example of a double IPA. No wonder why I guzzled the first 5 in the pack down before I took the time to review the final one.

another big brutal hoppy offering from lagunitas. pour is surprisingly orange, glowing, but the head is a let down, white but small. the nose is big sweet and bitter fresh hops, some english malts but they are way back. sweet up front, bitter on the back end, just what i like. the taste is the same, maybe a little too sweet for my palate as a big ipa, but it doesnt last long, and its not sugary, just like fresh hop sweetness. could stand a touch more carbonation, but the body is a nice medium, and its pretty drinkable for its abv. for once the yeast in a lagunitas beer seems to be different, my main knock against them has been all the same yeast for everything, but this doesnt appear to be that, which i am thankful for. overall a good beer, a 6er to share, a little sweet, but a nice wintery ipa. cant taste the booze at all, just the hops.
