Reviewed from session notes.

Pours out golden-orange color with two fingers of fluffy head that lasts for a minute and a half, medium levels of lacing left behind on the glass. The nose has a medium amount of tropical fruit bowl, but the flavor remains deeply resinous from start to finish and filled with sweet caramel and orange / lemon peel. The tropical fruits from the nose only appear in the flavor at a muted level once the brew has been given a chance to warm up for a while. ABV is perceptible as a medium-light hotness in the finish and a slight booziness in the nose. Thicker side of medium body, medium carbonation.

Better than average but not quite exceptional. I wish the tropical fruit was just as strong in the flavor as it was in the aroma.

A: Pours amber, and gives a thick off-white-to-amber head that dissolves to generous lacing. Be careful with the head... My glass overfloweth on my first pour.

S: There's some fruit and pine, which combine to give a pineapple-type scent, and a sweet honey aroma.

T: There's a bitterness zap, then a bountiful fruit explosion of apple, orange, and pineapple. Pine undertone gives way to a slight malt and lingering bitterness. Outstanding.

M: Surprisingly creamy and full-bodied.

This was my first introduction to Lagunitas and to the Double IPA style, and I was not disappointed in the slightest.

Poured from a bottle into a New Belgium snifter. It has a nice clear light amber color and a nice solid head. The nose is faint and sweet. Orange marmalade and some pine notes dominate.

The beer has a soft, creamy mouthfeel and medium-full body. There's lots of malt to balance out the hops, so the beer isn't as bitter as it promises. The sweetness is somewhat overdone and medicinal, but I still get hints of apricots with the cedar-like hop presence at mid-palate. Slightly dry, boozy finish doesn't linger too long.

I'm not sure how old this bottle is, but I certainly didn't get much hop flavor from it. I prefer this brewer's standard IPA to this sweet, boozy concoction. This beer is very reminiscent of DFH 90min IPA. It's pretty well-crafted, but it's not the kind of IPA (or IIPA) I seek out. I prefer those with big bitter tropical fruit notes. I won't be buying this stuff again.
