(From a hollow-stemmed chalice)
Appearance: Maximus pours a slightly hazy rubiginous, with no visible bubbles in the body. The head is a healthy white one, and it collapses down into a thin cap, leaving a bit of lacing.
Smell: Straight into the nose are the piney hops with a touch of sweetness that might be caramel. Grapefruit is in there too, along with citrus fruit rinds and even more of the hops. As the beer warms, onion comes through, and this knocks my score down a touch.
Taste: The grapefruit is more prominent in the mouth than in the nose. The hops are sharp, and they're pleasantly cut off by the sweet citrus.
Mouthfeel: The beer is very smooth, and quite thick too and this heft holds the carbonation down to an enjoyable level. Maximus imparts on the mouth a filmy coating, and that makes sense given the sweetness consistent throughout the beer.
Overall: As always seems to be the case with Lagunitas, I thoroughly enjoyed this very well rounded beer. All those hops, all that sweetness, all that ABV and yet Maximus is still a beautifully balanced beer.

A - Had a copper to orange look to it.
S - I pick up alot of citrus in this one and some grapfruit and then of course the hops.
T - I can taste the grapefruit alot in this one; almost too much. It's smooth at first and then hits you with a solid hoppy flavor.
M - Pretty nice and smooth overall.
O - This beer is a winner in my book and for the price of a six pack being around 7.99 some places it's a steal
Edit on 5/10/12: Second time around and I liked this beer so much more. Maybe I got a bad bottle the 1st time but I have changed my score here because the first review isn't on par with what I am tasting now.

Sharp hops bite meets a light malt combination that has crackers and biscuits type of feel. Hint of caramel, but not tons. Not overly sweet like other Imperial IPA's. Maximus is truly drinkable, especially considering the high alcohol by volume. A clean finish that leaves a spicy bitter notch in the back of the throat. Pine, grapefruit and onion in the nose and front of the tongue, a little water at the back to help it out.
Goes down smooth. Almost too smooth. This was gone before I noticed, and it's high abv has kicked in.
A truly tasty brew, and I'm happy to enjoy it fresh from the source. One knock? It tastes one malt step back from Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. I'd suspect the hops and malts in each are very similar. But then again, that's why we always say that IIPA's are very nearly barleywines anyway.

Pours clean clear honey colored. Head dissipates quickly but sticky lacing follows the beer down. Grapefruit and solid hops with a balanced malt backbone. Great beer. This is my go to beer when I'm feeling like a big malty hoppy offering. One of my top 10 favorites for sure.
