Pours a dark amber almost brown with an off white head that trails the glass. The smell was full of grapefruit from the hops, but also a lot of earthy nutty notes from the malt. The taste was surprising with a nice malt backbone up front with a lot of bread flavors slowly coming into the grapefruit and pine from the hops. Was very happy with the amount of balance this beer has given some very intense flavors.

Maximus is a deep gold-copper with a bit of carbonation and a light haze. The head is a creamy tan one that rises to 3/4 finger, holds up well, and throws down pretty good patching followed by spottier lacing.
Overall, I'm a little surprised with this beer's designation as a DIPA. I'd call it a pretty good IPA. It's got the classic pine and citrus blended with lighter malts, and it shows a little bit of a peppery bite. It develops a little pith, particularly as lots of rindy notes come out. The nose puts the hops out a bit more aggressively, and a hint of harshness develops at the back end in the flavor.
The body is medium, plenty of heft to it, and there's a good balance on the palate of both crispness and smoothness. It may lost just a touch, and a little something develops slightly underneath to scrape a bit, but it works well.

Again I love Laguitas and this was one that I hadn't tried yet but I knew it would be good.

A - Nice orange color. Crystal clear with a ton of bountiful off-white head and strong lacing.

S - Pleasant and strong hop fragrance with citrus, pine, fresh hops, and some dankness. Not really anything else discernible aside from the hops and a slight fruity ale-yeast character.

T - Great flavor with the strong citrus hop character predominant with some fresh grassy hop tones along with some dank and pine notes in the middle. The hop bitterness are also present but not in contention with the NW hops. There are also sweet malt and yeast character but mostly covered up by the hops. Really tastes a lot like a delicious DIPA should. Maybe some alcohol for an 8% but not bad and could just be me.

M - Medium mouth-feel with moderate carbonation. Pretty typical of Lagunitas DIPAs as far as feel.

Overall, a very good DIPA. If you like nice bitterness, slight booze, and full hop flavor-punch then this is a good one to try. I still prefer their "Lagunitas Sucks" DIPA more but I did very much enjoy this one. I really love Lagunitas' ability to make their beers taste more like amazing homebrew than snooty top-shelf "craft beer."

Copper pour with two fingers of fluffy white head. Great looking. Aromas of pine and grapefruit, with some malty hints of biscuit and bread. Flavors translate from aromas, with a very smooth semi-sweet mouthfeel. Good stuff as always from Lagunitas!

Bottled on January 2nd, 2015. Poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a golden color with a dense head of white foam that caps the beer perfectly. Lots of lacing with excellent head retention.

S: Clean pine with some faint floral and citrus hop aromas coming out. Also a good amount of biscuity malts that stack up fairly well to the hops. Not as aromatic as I would expect for a double IPA, but good nonetheless.

T: Crisp flavors of pine and citrus with biscuity malts. Good balance between malt and hops with only moderate bitterness.

M: Medium body with a medium-high amount of carbonation. The finish is slightly bitter but it is tolerable and doesn't linger.

O: Overall this wasn't outstanding, but it was a solid double IPA. Not as huge as I would expect for a beer of this style, but it was good. It has good balance and is very crisp and refreshing. Personally I liked this a lot more then Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas. I would drink this again.

A very tasty ipa without the strong lingering happiness. Defiantly up there in my list!

While not nearly as awesome as Lagunitas Sucks, this is still a solid IIPA.

This IPA is sublimely wonderful. Not overly bright and flowery, nor bitter, it is smooth and rich and buttery- somewhat akin to Dogfish 90 min IPA. No lingering bitterness on the tounge it finishes cleanly.

Look: Excellent clarity, medium gold/light amber in color, visible carbonation, and a steady, frothy white head. this book has a solid cover.

Smell: Pale malt is at the front of the bouquet once poured, smelling of freshly baked white bread. It's not long, however, before the beer warms enough to let loose a semi-strong diverse and well blended hop potpourri. These notes seem to span the entire hop portfolio: They are resinous, floral, citrusy, and earthy, with no one scent dominating the others. A toasted toffee vapor brings some warm sweetness into the mix, as does a hint of pineapple.

Taste: The hop bitterness promised by the label (hops, hops, and hops!) is tamed by a lip smacking butterscotch element. This sweet quality is one I often observe in English IPAs, and I tend to really enjoy it. However, I can imagine that some hop heads would be let down by the lack of bitterness. It's there, but it's not high, not high at all. But more importantly (in my opinion, anyway), is that this beer is deeelicious. The impressive balance in the scent is matched on the tongue. Lightly toasted French bread is a clean, yet flavorful canvas for the overlapping hop flavors, which are again sweetened by a delicate blend of tropical fruit and toasted toffee. Again, no one hop taste stands out in particular, but tea leaves, tangerine rinds, dandelions, and a sprig of mint are all immediately detectable. The one shortcoming other than lack of bitterness is a slight mineral quality to the taste which presents itself as a sulfuric flash in the pan.

Mouthfeel: More creamy than crisp, the mouthfeel lacks the dryness required to boost bitterness to the level anticipated. The finish is smooth and slightly velvety, and the carbonation is merely moderate. These qualities, however, help to highlight the complexity created by the various flavors--a harsher finish would slice off their roots.

Overall: If I were rating this as a beer judge, I would have to dock points for the lack of bitterness and the thickness of the mouthfeel, since both are qualities not typically desirable in an Imperial IPA. But as a simple consumer and beer lover, I am quite enamored by the impeccable balance this beer achieves while still exhibiting great complexity. It is perhaps a little too similar to the rest of the Lagunitas canon, especially for a limited release, but it is one of those beers I would look forward to regardless of my mood, my craving, the season, etc.

Way, way underrated on this site. I usually trust The Bros, but they're off on this one. Malty, hoppy, balanced, aromatic, none of the dreaded and unpalatable Simcoe hop - this is the real deal of an IIPA. And it comes in 6-packs at a reasonable price. On my rating scale, Stone RuinTen is a perfect 100; DFH 90-Minute a 97. I'll give Maximus a 94. One of the best values in the IIPA genre!

A pretty hop forward DIPA. Sort of like a toned down Hop Stoopid.

Would purchase and drink again if available. Probably won't seek out though, many other great ones I would want to grab first.

I enjoy this more than Eyeball/Brown Shugga...less than Hop Stoopid and Imperial Stout (as far as Lagunitas)

prefer this to SN Torpedo as well

Color nothing extraordinary...Smell is phenomenal piney-hop blast, overall feel is not special but the taste is one of the better in terms of what i like in an IPA (initial tongue better than aftertaste in terms of strength of flavor)

Poured a orangish amber into a IPA glass from SA with a beautiful frothy off white head that left a nice lacy trail. Aroma was excellent with citrus piney scent with a bit of grassy smell and a touch of carmel. Taste was same as the nose, with a wonderful bitterness that lingered a full minute after the taste. Would love to try this straight up fresh!
