look: 4.75 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 5

Poured from 22 oz bottle into a pint glass.

L: Extremely dark brown with a hint of ruby tinge. Absolutely no light penetrates the beer - it is truly a sinister one. Pours 2.5 fingers of head in a semi-hard initial pour.

S: Where do I begin? It's remarkably complex, with raw chocolate, incredibly dark barley, peat, dates, and even a dank floral character. Very interesting.

T: Lots of sweetness and chocolate upfront, balanced out by roastiness and wanton smokiness. After that is said and done, the hops cut through the brew to provide a bit of a piney bite, though certainly not in an overwhelming sense. Can't really tell that it's a 9.9 percenter - it's absurdly drinkable for its size.

M: Creamy, medium-bodied, and not very carbonated. Very nice to slowly sip away at.

O: Wow! What a brew. Nicely balanced out with a great variety of flavors without being overly complex. An exceptional imperial stout. After having downed two bottles of this in my lifetime, it has become one of my favorites. Definitely one of the best beers I've ever tried. (1,055 characters)

Poured from draft into a 12oz glass, this beer is black, pretty thick in body by appearance and has a thin khaki head that fades away but leaves some good lacing. The aroma is very much defined by the roasted malts, which mostly remind me of slightly burnt coffee. The taste is of roasted malts as well. The taste of coffee, toast, a little smoke and a little cocoa come through. Rich but balanced, yet not a beer that blows my mind. Mouthfeel is smooth and somewhat creamy.
overall this is a solid imperial stout. (514 characters)

Hmmm...

This one was far too dark-fruity for me. I didn't even get any coffee or mocha flavor out of it. Too sweet as well, and not in a milk stout way kinda sweetness. This one was weird. Usually lagunitas does a good job with beers but with this one I simply don't have much to say.

Their bomber beers always tend to let me down. (333 characters)

look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Appearance 4.25: Pours out a thick, viscous black. Gorgeous khaki head. Great lacing.

Smell 4.25: So nice. Treacly sweet malt bouquet with smoked grains and a load of dark chocolate. Also some currant hints and some deeper alpha hoppiness.

Taste 4.5: Front is smooth and sweet with a nice hit of smoke and some early hop bitterness. Middle is where a huge wave of darkest dark chocolate and sweet grains washes over your palate, but this is balanced by a very clean and refreshing hop bitterness (I'm thinking Northern Brewer hop). Finish is smokey, tangy, somewhat chocolatey and smooth...good lord is this smooth. No hint of any alcohol. Aftertaste is long, smokey and just delicious and -again-- no hint of booze at all.

Mouthfeel 4.5: Smooth as silk in the mouth, with absolutely no burning.

Overall 4.5: Fabulous Imperial Stout. Smooth, balanced and just about perfect, this is a dangerous beer as there is very little indication of its "9.9%" (probably more!) ABV until you feel it burning in your tummy after you drink it! So nice and the tangy/sour taste levels make it very refreshing. Highly recommended. (1,130 characters)

Poured from a 22oz. bottle.

A: Pours a very deep dark brown with two fingers of creamy tan head. Excellent retention and lacing.

S: Chocolate, caramel, dark roasted malts, dark fruits, toffee, a slight smokiness, and earthy hops.

T: Chocolate, caramel, sweet malts, dark fruits, and earthy hop bitterness on the finish.

M: Full bodied, low carbonation, creamy.

O: A solid brew but nothing that sets it apart from many other RIS's I've had. But if you are looking for a good stout this is a solid buy. (505 characters)

22 oz brown bottle poured into a snifter

Lagunitas Imperial Stout has a very dark brown [almost black] with a slight red cast to its body. A 1-finger bubbly dark tan head sits atop. The aroma is of roasted dark malts, chocolate and a little toffee with some hops in the background. The nose also picks up a little smokiness as well. The taste is dominated as most Russian Imperial Stouts are, by roasted malt but not as full/heavy as some "big RIS's" [i.e., Old Rasputin] making it easy to drink. Chocolate, toffee, and coffee flavors are also present. There is a nice balancing hop presence. The mouth feel is smooth, a little chewy with a heavy-medium body.

This Imperial Stout is tasty and not too filling. The flavor becomes richer as the ale warms...so, don't drink it too cold. (793 characters)

Poured into a pint glass revealing a 1 finger head that disappeared quickly. This beer is nearly opaque black. Smell is of dark chocolate and espresso. Molasses also breaks through but mostly coffee. This brew is a flavor explosion. Rich with coffee chocolate and fruit such as raisins or figs. I think the feel could be a little fuller. It left something to be desired based on the rich taste. Overall this brew was outstanding. Everything you want in an imperial stout minus a good chew with the mouth feel. (509 characters)

Surprisingly this was a very good tasting beer.
I bought for under $5 and found it to be very good.
I'll hafta be on the lookout for it again. It's a keeper (157 characters)

L: Pours brilliant deep dark brown to black under a very thin tan film.
S: Dark dried fruit, caramel, malt, fruit.
T: Has a big malty attack – primarily caramel with light chocolate - balanced by fruit, dried fruit, alcohol and hops.
F: Chewy, below average carbonation.
O: I have had this fresh and aged up to 3 years. The fresh has more clean malt flavors and dried fruit while as it ages it develops more sherry notes. Both are very good. (447 characters)

Wow what a good imperial stout for the price point! Really can't beat this for $5 a bottle. Really delicious. The nose didn't do much for me but the taste was unreal with toasted malt and bitter dark chocolate! Silky mouthfeel. I think it's up there with the big name stouts. And like I said for $5 can beat that boys, cheers! (326 characters)

A 22 ounce bomber poured into a Nonic/Imperial pint glass (probably not the best idea considering the 10% abv but it sure looks pretty).

Appearance - Almost pitch black (a slight hint of ruby red). Big, lumpy, course head. Good lacing. The beer looks a little intimidating.

Smell - Semi-sweet chocolate. Alcohol.

Taste - Sweet. Black licorice. Burnt toast. Herbal. Alcohol. A dry finish.

Mouth - Bitter. Good carbonation.

Overall - About as subtle as a sledge hammer. Like the Samual Smith's Imperial Stout that I reviewed a few months back, this beer is not for the faint of heart. These beers really should be sipped and not chugged. A good beer, for what it is, but I much prefer knocking down smooth, malty English Porters with an abv in the 4% range. (763 characters)

This stout pours dark like a fine coffee and provides a big bold head that leaves considerable lacing as it subsides. It has a full, smooth, creamy texture, and a taste that is a subtle mix of cocoa and coffee with velvety malts and a little pop of hops at the back end of each mouthful. The 9.9 ABV is entirely masked by the smooth easy flavor so its a real creeper. I'm a fan of this one. (393 characters)

Black pour with tan foam. Copious lace from top of SAPP to bottom. Chocolate malt and a whiff of hops; more raisin/hop aroma as it warms. Dark chocolate with a little hop interplay at first; stone fruits (cherry and plum) follow. Rich, velvety mouthfeel. Excellent big stout - alcohol is completely hidden. Very tasty. (318 characters)

22 ouncer poured into a chalice (that's what you get when watching GOT while drinking this). Phenomenally balanced imperial stout! The bitterness is just the right amount to work with the roastiness (not a word but can't think of another way to describe it) and sweetness. Really a great example of the style. And you can't complain about the price point. Once again, Lagunitas hits one out of the ballpark. (407 characters)

Very heavy beer at first couple sips... but once u get into it and warms up, you can't get enough. Pours deep brown, basically black with a creamy head with good lacing. Definitely worth the time and money. I just keep buying this beer. Cheers! (244 characters)

Pours a very dark brown with some ruby highlights. Cocoa dominates the aroma but mixes with a bit cedar. Tastes of cocoa and molasses with a curious caramel sweetness. Finishes somewhat dry, but sticky chocolate/burnt marshmallow sweetness coats the tongue but the bitter dark grains and hops seem to keep the beer from being too sweet. It's dryness makes it a dangerously drinkable imperial stout. (399 characters)

Appearance - 3.75/5
A small amount of dark beige head. Pours almost black, although reddish tinges can be seen around the edges of the glass.

Smell - 3.75/5
Hops, chocolate roastiness, a hint of smokiness and alcohol. The aroma is fairly sweet.

Taste - 2.75/5
Fairly smoky, some hops, and a strange slightly earthy taste. Not really digging the taste of this stout. The flavor is weird, I can't quite define it but not that good.

Mouthfeel - 3.5/5
A medium level of carbonation, fairly smooth and fairly crisp. Medium-bodied.

Overall - 3/5
This beer looked promising, though I didn't know what to expect. It turned out that the flavor was kinda strange, though not terrible. I would not get this beer again nor recommend it to anyone. There are some beers that you would not buy again, but are glad you tried it once. This is not one of those beers. I regret buying it. (873 characters)

Black colour, I mean really black colour, with light brown lacing that lasts. Aroma is roasted malt with definite cocoa and coffee smells. The taste is much like I discribe in the aroma but with a vanilla twist. Aftertaste is when the hops sneak through but is balances well with the sweet malts. Mouthfeel is light for a stout. Overall a quite enjoyable beer. I think I'll have another. (387 characters)

Midnight black with very dark brown color when held to the light. Dark tan lacing that persists for a long time. The smell is faint, but noticeable smell of espresso and alcohol, which also predominates in the taste. An initial espresso sweetness turns into burnt toast taste with a nutella sweetness--not really chocolate. Anise and bitter earthy hops take over as a long-lasting pleasant bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is excellent--viscous and creamy, easily oxygenated in the mouth. Generally a very solid imperial stout, but not one of the best. I'd buy and drink again. (574 characters)
