bottle into tulip
appearance: pitch black, <1 finger off off white head, some lacing
smell: dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, slight anise and black licorice tint
taste: bitter espresso, dark chocolate, and roasted coffee are the first things that come to mind. After a few sips I was getting some minor notes of plum, licorice, anise, as the the nose would suggest, but also an herbal, very earthy, resinous hoppiness that was emphasized a bit more in this beer than other RIS's. The result; it's a bit unbalanced, but still a great stout. The lingering aftertaste is mostly booze and bitterness, not that chocolate or coffee flavor i expect in a RIS. It seems this has hints of a Black DIPA mixed in with it.
mouthfeel: average carbonation, thick/full bodied
overall: A great take on an RIS, and for the $4.99 price, a great buy. However, I would rather shell out the extra $3 while the Stone is still around, and i'd easily pick a Ten Fidy, Expedition Stout, or even an Old Rasputin over this, which is arguably the only other widely (and always) available i've listed above. Not bad, but it's just not as balanced as some of it's competition, it's a little booze heavy and the earthy hops combined with the bitter espresso tones just make it slightly off balance, but it's still enjoyable.
