Poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours completely opaque black with a small, tan head that fades to some bubbles around the edge of the glass. Lacing is minimal.

S: Dark chocolate is the first thing I pick up. This is followed by an unusually potent alcohol scent, which is sharp and unpleasant. Mild dark fruits round out the aroma.

T: The chocolate flavor is still prominent, but now drier and not as dark. Alcohol is unfortunately still present, but thankfully tempered back a bit. Some caramel/toffee flavor melds with a mild dark fruit, cherry and fig.

M: Thick, but overall very dry. Almost reminds me of a Syrah the way it dries out my mouth. Alcohol heat seems to be covered by the thickness, though I can still taste it. Somewhat sticky as it goes down.

O: Probably the poorest effort I've ever had from Lagunitas. Alcohol flavor is potent and ruins most of the beer for me, even though it is lower than some of their other brews (Brown Shugga). Not what I've come to expect from a this brewery.

22 oz bottle

Appearance:
Pours a creamy head, slightly lacing lingers on glass.

Smell:
Smells like fudge.

Taste:
Roasty, sweet, then a metallic bitterness. A bit of ash. Would go well with a campfire and a smore. Warming and boozy, but not out of balance.

Mouthfeel:
Full bodied, creamy texture. High carbonation, especially for stout which was originally more flat.

I like it! Nothing spectacular, but a solid and enjoyable beer.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: 0.5L mug
From: BevMo in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $4.25 (special 2-for-$8.50 w/ BevMo card)
Purchased: June 26, 2014
Consumed: June 28, 2014
Misc.: N/A

Poured a pitch black color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky tan head. Above average-to-good amount of spider web lacing on the sides of the glass. Above average-to-average retention on the top.

Very nice on the nose. Got cappuccino, toffee, caramel, chocolate, hot fudge, chocolate milk, some bitter coffee beans and faint black crayon.

Tasted pretty close to the smell, although more bitterness. Bitter cappuccino, toffee, caramel, bitter crayon, dark chocolate, some booziness late and some bitter roasty malts.

Full body. Slick texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, bitter, rather warming finish.

A decent imperial stout, but not as good as I’d hoped.
