Poured unto a snifter.

Appearance: Superior dark brown (pretty much jet black) with a 1/3" tan head.

Smell: Smells like molasses and pumpernickel but extremely dim.

Taste: Liquid pumpernickel bread, as I was told by a fellow drinker (my g/f). Extremely tasty and quite potent.

Mouth: This beer biggest problem is how flat it gets after 5-10 minutes. It is smooth somewhat sweet after taste but texture could be tweaked.

Overall: Has it's "issues" but not my issue if you know what I mean. Keep drinking and be blessed, this is awesome beer. Salud!

22 ounce bottle.
Pours coffee-black with a thin, espresso crema-like head.

Hints of bittersweet chocolate, molasses, plums, dates, and vanilla set up shop first in the aroma. There is a real sweetness in the nose...a fruity, chocolaty sweetness...like chocolate cake. There are also some notes of hazelnut, charred wood, and caramel.

The flavor is bittersweet. Up front are hints of milk chocolate, light roasted coffee, molasses, vanilla, caramelized brown sugar, and sweet plums.

The mouthfeel is a bit astringent, leaving a slight alcohol burn. This, however, does not hinder the rich flavor involved in this stout. However, for as dark as this beer is, and for as much flavor that sits on the palate, and for the hefty ABV, the body of the beer actually seems a bit light. It is not as thick as one may expect.

Overall, a good imperial stout at a really good price. In a world of increasingly huge stouts, this one fits right in, while not trying to be a copycat.

Picked up a bomber and poured into my Afflihem chalice. Deep brown black with slight tan head which left only a slight lace around the rim. Smell them malts and coffee. Tastes rich and malty and mildly coffee au chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with alcohol warmth. Overall a pretty decent imperial stout. Sure there are several better examples out there but this is a reasonably priced example.

From notes, sampled 12/22.

2010 bottling. 22oz bomber split 3 ways into chalice's.

A: Pours a light black with red highlights...light lace, low carbonation. Very clear and obviously filtered.

S: The noes has an interesting sweetness for a RIS, and definitely lower roastiness than I was expecting. There is some dark fruit (currant, raisin), and some of Lagunitas' signature hop profile.

T: A touch vinous with the emphasis on the sweetness and dark fruit character, maybe even a bit like rum...a touch astringent. Thin body, with very little robust roasted malt character. A bit of booze. Light astringency, a touch of vanilla and wood.

MF: Thin (as mentioned before) medium body. Low carbonation.

O: Not really impressed. Doesn't seem like a cellarable beer right now. It isn't bad, but there are so many other great Russian Imperial Stouts out there.
