My craft beer experience seriously started a little over a year ago. I remember buying the Old Gnarlywine by Lagunitas in 2010 and absolutely loving it. Since then I've tried Old Ruffian, Bigfoot, Big Worse, Anchor Steam, Old Guardian and more. Nothing really compared to the Lagunitas Barleywine, plus at 3.99 it's unbeatable. Anyway, I was pleased to find this at the local beer store...lets see if its as good as I remembered.
Appearance-Brown/Redish body with a very thin, head. After the first sip the lacing was just sitting there above the beer. This beer looks outstanding.
Smell-Alot going on, I still consider myself pretty novice when it comes to craft beers and usually I get lost in an aroma like this, but can really pick out everything. Sweet candy scent, for some reason makes me thing of christmas. Pine, wood, just enough barley and hops. Strong cherry scent with some citrus.
Taste-There is sooo much going on in here. Very very rich and sweet. Plum, cherry, lots of sweet malt. I can get the barley and the hops are present at the finish. It almost tastes like an Italian rum cafe(those glazed breads with the fruit in the middle).
Mouthfeel-Full-bodied, what you should expect from a Barleywine. Very easy and not too much heat, alcohol covered real well.
Overall-The only thing I would have liked is a little hoppier finish. I remember it being a little hoppier in 2010, although it may just be that my palate has matured. This beer is great for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the best time, desert. I've never been very dissapointed with Lagunitas and this brew is my favorite they have to offer(Hop Stoopid close 2nd). I'm even more excited now knowing that Lagunitas is expanding...Keep it Up!

Cracked the cap on this with a vigorous pssshhhh. Huge biscuit and honey malts with fruit cake, juicy cherry, and plums. Demererra sugar and honey sweetness are prominent. No alcohol presence in this, and a nice thick chewy mouthfeel. Intense flavors that make for a delicious dessert, but glad I had someone to share the bomber with, as the sweetness could become a bit too much after 12 ounces.
