2008 Vintage poured into a Duvel tulip glass
Pours a translucent deep mercurial red hue, bit thick and foamy off-white head sustains, thick lacing
Smell is caramel malts, dark fruits, brown sugar, light chocolate and alcohol
Taste is sweet malts and dark fruits which open up to grassy, earthy hops and alcohol burning, tones of cocoa, toffee and molasses, finishes sweet and boozy
Mouthfeel is medium/full-bodied, creamy and smooth texture, moderate carbonation
Drinkability is moderate, this is a good example of American barleywine with a slightly higher emphasis on the hops, alcohol sensation is biting throughout and hinders sustained drinking, not a bad beer to try out if you like the style
Serving type: bottle

2011 keg. 32oz growler fill from Green's PG, poured into a Conquest snifter.
A: Pours a slightly hazy, rich auburn body, with a half-inch of beige head. The head dissipates to just a ring, but laces through the life of the beer.
S: Caramel, and a lot of pine. Way more pine than I would have expected for a 3-4 year old beer.
T: The hops are not as bitter as might be expected from a fresh American barleywine, but they still take center stage here. Lots of pine, then caramel, followed by a little dark fruit mingling with pine again in the finish.
M: Big, lush, without being syrupy.
O: This is a really good, still hoppy barleywine after all these years. It reminds me of how Old Ruffian ages--very well.
Serving type: growler
