Pours out of the bottle with a dark reddish color body and a tall off white foamy head. Great head retentions and the lacing just sticks everywhere on the glass. Big hops here, citric hops over a sweet fruity and malty scent. A few different fruits going on with some caramel and a bit of pine resin. Very appetizing aroma. The taste hits you hard with big hops and big malt. Dark rips fruits mix with a variety of hoppy components, grapefruit, pine and floral notes. Caramel and a bit of alcohol. A dry and bitter finish. This is one big smelling and tasting brew. Very creamy and thick. Coats your mouth a bit. Hoppy ass American Barleywine done right. There is plenty going here and it really packs a punch yet remains drinkable as hell. This was a 2004 bottle and still packed quite a punch I would love to get this stuff fresh.

2011 keg. 32oz growler fill from Green's PG, poured into a Conquest snifter.
A: Pours a slightly hazy, rich auburn body, with a half-inch of beige head. The head dissipates to just a ring, but laces through the life of the beer.
S: Caramel, and a lot of pine. Way more pine than I would have expected for a 3-4 year old beer.
T: The hops are not as bitter as might be expected from a fresh American barleywine, but they still take center stage here. Lots of pine, then caramel, followed by a little dark fruit mingling with pine again in the finish.
M: Big, lush, without being syrupy.
O: This is a really good, still hoppy barleywine after all these years. It reminds me of how Old Ruffian ages--very well.
