Poured into a straight pint glass gives a deep, rich copper-coloured beer with a thick darkish head which leaves plenty of lace.
The aroma is almost overpowering with its sweetness, but in a good way. Nowhere near as hoppy as most American barley wines, but the hops are there, along with a whiff of alcohol.
This is a huge taste bomb of a beer. The first thing I notice is pure sweetness followed by a wonderful toffee/caramel flavour, and finally a lingering hop bitterness. I have to say that maybe, in my humble opinion, there's just a bit too much going on in this one.
Mouthfeel is as big as the flavour - oily and full.
I'd like to give this one more for drinkability but the ABV and the sweetness make this impossible for me to enjoy more than one of these, which is no reflection on the beer itself or the people who concocted it. It's something I will buy again and enjoy.

2011 keg. 32oz growler fill from Green's PG, poured into a Conquest snifter.
A: Pours a slightly hazy, rich auburn body, with a half-inch of beige head. The head dissipates to just a ring, but laces through the life of the beer.
S: Caramel, and a lot of pine. Way more pine than I would have expected for a 3-4 year old beer.
T: The hops are not as bitter as might be expected from a fresh American barleywine, but they still take center stage here. Lots of pine, then caramel, followed by a little dark fruit mingling with pine again in the finish.
M: Big, lush, without being syrupy.
O: This is a really good, still hoppy barleywine after all these years. It reminds me of how Old Ruffian ages--very well.
