A - Deep blood orange with an almost burgundy cast. The head is two fingers of whipped beige cream that leaves spattered lace around the snifter. The pretty head never dipped below a thick 1/4 inch cap despite the high abv. This is a pretty, but not striking beer.
S - Deep caramel notes on top of hard French bread, dates, dried apricots, sandalwood, wet sand, and some nice "autumn leaf" hop notes.
T - Spicy pepper notes over deep caramel, toffee, and honey. Tons of really nice hops balance perfectly with the firm malt flavors. This is a complex and tasty brew!
M - Full bodied, muscular, and slightly warm from the high ABV. Finishes off-dry and hoppy. Nice.
D - This is a very nice barleywine that is a perfect example of the style. This one is nearly flawless.

2011 keg. 32oz growler fill from Green's PG, poured into a Conquest snifter.
A: Pours a slightly hazy, rich auburn body, with a half-inch of beige head. The head dissipates to just a ring, but laces through the life of the beer.
S: Caramel, and a lot of pine. Way more pine than I would have expected for a 3-4 year old beer.
T: The hops are not as bitter as might be expected from a fresh American barleywine, but they still take center stage here. Lots of pine, then caramel, followed by a little dark fruit mingling with pine again in the finish.
M: Big, lush, without being syrupy.
O: This is a really good, still hoppy barleywine after all these years. It reminds me of how Old Ruffian ages--very well.
