We took some fresh Sanguinello blood oranges, juiced 'em, concentrated that juice (without heat) and threw it into a wheatier version of our New Dogtown Pale Ale. The end result? A refreshingly hopped pale-ish ale with a huge citrus burst!

The man bent over his guitar, a shearsman of sorts. The day was green. They said, 'You have a blue guitar, you do not play things as they are.' The man replied, 'Things as they are / Are changed upon the blue guitar.' And they said then, 'But play, you must, a tune beyond us, yet ourselves, a tune upon the blue guitar of things exactly as they are.' He sighs, I cannot bring a world quite round, although I patch it as I can. I sing a hero's head, large eye and bearded bronze, but not a man, although I patch him as I can and reach through him almost to man. If to serenade almost to man is to miss, by that, things as they are, say it is the serenade of a man that plays a blue guitar..." These, the words of the Conjurer-in-Chief; Wallace Stevens, describe in perfect detail the work of a brewer as he sits to write a new recipe. Perfection is the goal, to fill a desire for a perfect beer. Yet the instrument of his mind and that of the brewhouse and yeast are the fallible tools at hand. And so he patches it as he can. A little hop here, a little citrus there, a yeast to marry the two, the worty substrate of reality calling the key and time signature. The beer that comes will be the beer we drink, the beer whose story we will tell here. The brewer does what he can and imagines a world quite round. Conjurer-in-Chief Stevens concludes; "Exceeding music must take the place of empty heaven and its hymns." What does it all have to do with beer?

a blood orange pale ale to ipa beer that was always a half step ahead of most of these, why blood orange got so popular all at once, i will never understand. sweet and oddly bitter at the same time as a fruit, but this beer wins for keeping it light on the malt and on the dry side overall, my only critique is the abv, this could be an all day beer in the below 6% abv range, why push it so strong? it slows down something that wants to move fast, but this is nice beer, especially in spring and summer. the grain base is nice and light, the beer isnt much darker than blonde, and it has a slow fading airy white head from both bottle and tap, definitely gets a little fish food coagulate in older bottles, but most of the time this is right on, unfiltered looking but not hazy. smells and tastes like flesh and rind of the fruit, quite authentic to me, better than most anyway because its intense but dry, and the hop profile seems well suited to the fruit, also a little bitter, but still in the pale range, a hint of pineapple and mango there, tropical then overall, but bold enough and even a little weedy enough to be northwestern still, great mix of flavors, and with a pretty much out of the way grain profile that lets this drink quite a bit lighter than it really is. a dangerous beer in that way, but really delicious. a little ahead of its time, and definitely ahead of its class...

So good. Its potent citrus aroma and flavors bypass any of my usual complaints. I sometimes feel there is a funky taste that lingers through many of this brands feature selections. This though ... very clean, delicious, and strong.

Pours a slightly chill hazed medium gold producing 3+ fingers of frothy, bright white, moderately lasting head that leaves sheets and webs of clumpy lace. Aroma is pale and biscuit malt with light hints of wheat amongst notes of orange, lemon, tangerine and other fruits. A bit floral there is also a herbal onion-like hint. Taste is orange, lemon, thin grapefruit, earthy herbal, floral and grass hop notes, pale malt, biscuit, maybe wheat (because I know it's supposed to be there) and light pepper it finishes with a dry, medicinal hint backed by a light hoppy bitterness that becomes the dominant character of a very bitter (for the style) aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Even though it's juicy the finish is not pleasant as it imparts a rough feel across the tongue which develops into a drawing aftertaste.

Lagunitas never disappoints and this one doesn’t break the streak...

Great looking beer with strong lacing. The smell was complex - resin, pine, citrus, and sweet juiciness. Mouthfeel is astringent with a taste that only mildly reminded me of a farmhouse. Anyway, a solid beer.
