On-tap at David Copperfield's; served in a shaker pint.

A: Soft straw body with a finger of pure white head.

S: Crisp, fresh cut grass and bready malts rise from the glass. There is that "suggestion" of hops that is more common in German pils than Czech ones.

T: Smooth, straw and toasted bread flavours. Hops are present, but a really pulled back, which is surprising for Lagunitas.

D: Its one-note, but its a good note. Easy drinking, refreshing stuff here. Nothing more, Nothing less.

Overall: Its a solid American-made pils. It won't blow your mind, but I certainly wouldn't mind having a case of this during the warmer months.

This is an interesting review, because someone earlier wrote or Freudian slipped, they mentioned it was a good lager, which is funny, because it's a pilsner, but in my head I felt like i was drinking a lager. Reviewing this as a pilsner, it comes across as not quite hitting the mark as a “true” pilsner. Is it a good beer, yes, actually it’s really good, excellent flavors, creamy, taste lingers in your mouth, but again, because of the maltiness, it comes across for me as more lagerish than pilsner.

Would I drink this again, yes, I drink it a lot, but I'm conflicted to review this as a standalone beer, I would probably give it a B+, but reviewing as a pilsner, like I said it didn’t quite hit that crisp part of a pilsner I'm used to looking for.

From my beer journal, reviewd in Early May 2011 from my Deschutes Pilsener glass.

A: Light white head that didn't last for me. Clear with a pale golden color.

S: More malty of a smell than I was expecting.

T: This didn't have a huge flavor for me actually. Felt a little subdued until the biting hop finish. In all honesty this didn't feel all that balanced.

M: Moderate to light body

O: Not bad but didn't wow me in any way. Worth a try, especially if you're a fan of the style.

Lagunitas Pils

12 oz bottle. Golden in color. Aroma of flowery hops and somewhat like all Lagunitas brews, sweet malt. In the taste, noble, czech hops with a spicy note and short livid bitterness. Really sweet base beer, lots of malt and alcohol making for a rather big "pilsner". Tastes like most Lagunitas products, sweet malt, alcohol and a good amount of hops. Not the cleanest example of the style, a bit boozy and flimsy. It is a decent brew, however, and worth trying.

It is a quality beer and there is no indication that it is the result of cost cutting. I discern a heavy malt and bitter hops. It is quite flavorful and many may enjoy it.

However, if you are looking for a pilsner, this does not taste like one. To make an analogy, if a brewer packages an apricot beer as their Summer Ale, how does one rate it?

If Lagunitas's product were offered as a 'Lager based upon a Czech pilsner,' the taste, mouthfeel, and overall ratings could be substantially higher.

The beer is a clear yellow with a 1-finger, tiny-bubbled white head. Minimal spider-webby lacing. Nose is extremely bready up front, followed by apricot, citrus, earthy hops and a bit of malt. The aroma gets a bit grassy as the beer drinks down. A crisp, caramel sweetness transitions to hops, crackery malt and then back to sweet. It seemsto be a little too much on the sweet side, but is a fairly well-balanced nonetheless. Medium body with light carbonation, a little oily on the tongue. I thought the finish would be crisper, but it is slightly wet. It doesn’t seem terribly indicative of a Pils, though a decent drink. I would have it again, but wouldn’t rave about it.

12oz bottle into pint glass.

Pours a crystal clear light toffee color with an almost purely white head.

Nose is fruity, bready, and slightly citrusy with a hint of apricot.

Taste is sweet and fruity (apricot is really standing out for me) with a caramel presence and a lot of hop bitterness. Hops are slightly grassy and leave a very bitter aftertaste. Beer is smooth and slightly flabby with moderate to high carbonation.

Overall an okay beer (and quite flavorful for a pils), but the hops leave too much bitterness in my mouth for this to be a truly sessionable drink. Would drink again, but won't seek it out.

Transparent yellow colored lager. Thin white head forms. Leaves a ring around the edge of the glass.

Sweet aroma of fresh baked rolls, honey and earthy hops.

Big, bready malt forms the base. Hint of honey sweetness. Earthy and leafy hop bitterness provide just the right amount to balance.

Light to medium bodied. Perfect amount of carbonation. Crisp finish. Semi-oily mid-drink.

A great pilsner. Good flavor, crisp and refreshing.

Pours a clean orange-ish color with an off white head. In the aroma, Czech hops and somewhat malty. In the taste, hops stand out, want to be a pils, but this beers' soul is an ale, I can taste it. A hop bite and medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a semi dry hop in the aftertaste. Drinks more like an ale, and I dig it!

TGIF....starting the weekend off with a Lagunitas Czech Pils....and it is goood! The appearnace is a clear golden brilliance with good carbonation and white froathy head. The smell includes malt and grain common of this style....for me pils dont blow me away re smell. The taste is very well balanced with good noble hops, malt, and grain. Even thought the ABV is higher than normal the beer is quite smooth. Definitely a session beer!

Aroma was very slight on this one...there was a small grain and vegetal type smell to it. Really, just a very clean aroma.

Taste is a little sweet at first with a bit of grain and even some caramel in there. This goes through the body, going into a fairly decent Noble hop bitterness that defines the style. It's certainly of average bitterness, if not a little above. Again, a little sweet on the finish....but it didn't have that toasty or really grainy quality that many of these beers do.

All in all, pretty average. Not offensive, but not top of style by any means.
