A beautiful light gold in color, totally clear, with a white head that reduces to a rough ring of foam in my glass.

It has a grainy and grassy smell, exactly what I'd expect for the style.

The taste is also grassy and grainy, with an extra citrus twang from the hops. This has a nice American tweak to the Czech style. The extra hop flavors are not extreme, though. Lagunitas has been very careful with this beer.

Overall this is a very good Pils, and one I would especially recommend to hop fans. It's not a hop bomb or extreme, but just a good example of a well-crafted beer.

Lagunitas PILS - Czech Style Pilsner

12 oz glass, 6pack sampler

Pours light amber/transulent gold. Bold head that vanished to a minimal lace. Tastes good. Lots of malts and barley. Goes down very smooth. Taste lasts at least at a small degree. Overall, decent representation of a Czech Pilsner. I'm a fan of the style and have always enjoyed Golden Pheasant, especially with a hearty Eastern European serving of duck or breaded pork with dumplings from Czech Plaza in Berwyn, IL.

Overall, decent bear. Prefer other Czech Pilsners.

12oz picked up at the Boise Coop for about $1.50... served in a smaller weizen glass.

Nice 2" head with long lacing and crusty rings... crystal clear dark straw color.

Aroma is clean pale malts and spicy hops... smells very good.

Flavor is the same.. a touch of earthiness from the hops... no yeasty fruitiness.. pretty carbonated and maybe a touch heavy viscosity for the style.

I don't know where the low ratings are coming from on this brew, it is everything expected from a West Coast "Czech style" pilsner... very balanced and a perfect summer session. I will try this again sometime up against the benchmark pilsner, while it may not be perfect... it is still pretty damned good given how hard it is to brew a good pils.

A stubby 12 oz bottle courtesy of Zorro, my '07 Secret Santa.

A: The pils is a beautiful pale yellow color, crisp and clear. A two plus finger head came out on pour and, by the looks of it, extensive lacing results.

S: The aroma is a crisp hoppy one, full of grassy herbal aromas, very earthy.

T: A sip reveals a very assertive hop profile, biting with grassy earthen flavors. Orange flavors pair with pepper to create a nice match against the grains. The maltiness is strong but does not overwhelm the hops. The hoppy finish continues long after a sip is gone.

M: The hops are crisp and clean, nice on the palate.

D: The abv strikes me as low. That, combined with the nice hop flavor, makes this a good drink, one of Lagunitas' best.

Picked up a bottle at AJ's in August for $1.59.

Beer poured a golden color with a thin white head. Nose is malty and pleasantly accentuated by floral hops. Taste is very nicely balanced with a nice peppery light hop finish. Mouthfeel is full bodied for the style, very satisfying. Overall drinkability is good. I really appreciate a well made beer in the Czech Pils style and Lagunitas has a put together a very nice representation.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a standard curved pilsner glass.

Appearance- Light and clear with a 2-finger head, lacing lingering thru to the end.

Smell- Saaz thru and thru. A bit over hopped as Lagunitas tends to do, but not overly so. Not terrible.

Taste- Saaz, 2-row, 6-row? This has a touch of complexity. Something that many pilsners rarely typify.

Mouthfeel- Sweet and malty. High carbonation. A little too high on carbonation. Light bodied.

Drinkability- Very, but would NOT buy again. This beer is too costly and not near as drinkable as a Pilsner should be.

It is a bit tough to review pilsner, becuase the profile for a good pilsner has a lot of very light flavors, but certain things need to be there. As in a lot of their beers Lagunitas Pils does a pretty good job, but not a perfect one, of getting it right.

The thing that stands out most to be is that this beer could be more carbonated. That would help it smell a little more crisp, give it a little more bite on the tounge and lighten it up a bit.

Good color, just about perfect.

Super drinkable, excellent with lots of diffrent foods or just by itself.

A nice west coast made version of Urquell. Not quite as good as fresh pilser in Prague though.

12 oz. brown bottle poured into Sam Adams pint glass. No dating found on bottle.

Appearance: deep golden color body with a creamy white small bubbled head that dissipates to leave sticky lacing. Very clean and clear with gentle carbonation.

Smell: honey sweetness and floral hops to balance along with mild alcohol.

Taste: at first, the sweetness of honey and grains is upset by a very flowery hop presence. Definite taste of alcohol is not well hidden.

Mouthfeel: creamy and slick on the tongue with medium body. Not crisp like I would expect of a pils. Decent carbonation.

Drinkability: could put two or three away rather easily for a middle of the road pilsner, but would appreciate more crispness at finish.

Looks about like average beer-remarkably unremarkable . Smells nice and understated-refreshing in the nose. Good balance in this one with a clean bitterness that lingers. Nice effervescent mouthfeel. A good, solid session pils...good with spicy foods.

$1.80 for a single at Jacks. Filtered. Pours out to a brilliantly clear straw golden...perfect pils color. Forms a rocky white head with average retention and sparse lacing. The aroma is crisp, fresh, clean pale malts and a subtle Saaz floral hopiness. Mouthfeel is crisp with a nice acidity and smooth finish. Medium-light body. The taste is great...lots of nice Euro malts up front with pleasant grassiness, a floral and citric nice hop bite, an expertly balanced bitterness and ends in a subtle grain husk sweetness. Wow. No off-flavors.

This is a world-class pils. Defining for the style and full of flavor, yet oh-so-easy to drink. I love this brew. Highly recommended. I will be buying much more!

Appearance: Pale yellow color, sort of golden hued. The tiniest bit cloudy. Has a small-to-moderate head with good retention.

Smell: Very light grainy taste. I can barely detect a lemony scent. Hops aroma in the faintest sense. This sort of smells like nothing... I can'r really believe it. But I have taken notes two days in a row now, and still nothing really strong in the aroma for me.

Taste: Now the taste is strong and good. I find the flavor to be beautifully balanced noble hops and a moderate malt backbone. Actually the balance is a bit towards the hops, which I like. This is tangy and hoppy. There is a little appley sweetness right in the beginning, and a little harshness of hops at the end.

Mouthfeel: Perky. It has a pretty dry finish that mellows out to something a bit more moderate after the hops bite fades.

Drinkability: This is a pretty easy drinker for most people. I think that some might find the upfront hop presence to be a bit much.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer had a very nice white head with very nice lacing qualities. It was nicly displayed. The smell was bready and yeasty. The beer was nice and refreshing tasting with a pretty golden color. It was a tad sweet but overbering, a really good summer brew. I will buy again.

Pours with perfect clarity and fluffy soapy white head. Nose is spicy hops. Taste is medium carbonation with some hop flavour. Malts are are nicy done. Finishes clean initially, but an aftertaste shows up that is metaillic aspirin like. That really hurts drinkability. Not a bad thirst quencher.

Pours a very pale color with a thin one-finger head. Aroma is very nice and light. Malty like a typical pilsener. There's a lot of sweetness in the nose. Taste is nice and malty with a decent biscuity malt taste in the back of the throat. Light and drinkable here. Very crisp taste overall. I could knock back a few of these on a warm day.

What's not to like here? There's no skunkiness like macro pilseners. There's no dingy aroma of "cooked corn" here. It's just a Czech Pils, much like the folks of the Czech Republic would have intended.

Poured from a bottle a hazy lemon yellow with a thin white head and not much lacing.

Aroma is mostly sweet malts.

This has so much more body and depth than the more traditional Czech Pilsners. Some sweet malts with just a smidgen of bitterness. No sulfurs at all.

Mouthfeel is light yet rich with a fizzy carbonation.

I love this interpretation of a Czech Pilsner from Lagunitas. So easy to drink and enjoy. Time for another six.

Bright gold color. Aromas not pronounced but mostly malty fruits. Flavor is good but in my opinion not very well balanced. It leans too much to the bitter hops, which is fine for an American pilsner but this claims to be a Czech style pilsner. The malts should be more pronounced. Still, a pretty good beer and quite drinkable.

Sampled on 10-6-07

Pours a brilliant gold color, with a craggy white head that absolutely coats the glass as it descends.

Smell is subtle and surprisingly fruity. No real standard pilsner skunkiness either.

Taste is very good, a nice malty quality balanced by a sizable dose of grassy hops. Smooth and spicy on the finish.

Mouthfeel is good, creamy but with a nice carbonation kick.

Drinkability is very good, I wish macros tasted like this.

Overall an outstanding example of the style. The very balanced malt and hops make it a pleasure to drink. Glad to finally see Lagunitas is Michigan.

Quick notes on this beer:

*Dark gold, much darker then the average pils.
*Clear and thick
*Hoppier smell than most pilsners
*Has a woody hop scent with a "wet" malt smell
*Taste is bitter and hoppy. Some bitter malt and yeast as well
*Feels wet but with a bitter kick; a thick pilsner.
*Mild sour apple taste, not a bad thing
*Bready yeast sweetens as it warms.
*Feels fizzy and bubbly, like a saison
*Both sweet and sour tastes come out with more warmth
*Feels "spiky" and harsh, not smooth
*It's hard drinking for a pils, and quite strong considering
*Lots of flavor, but just too fizzy

Czech it out. The pour is a lemony golden color with a decent creamy head with a decent pour. Retention is limited but stays for some time before having limited lacing on the glass.

The nose is quite fruity for a pilsner. Noticeable hop presence with some floral scents. Some lighter rose-like qualities that is a little off base. The nose is limited in the malt with more of a grainy base instead of a classic pilsner aromas that you should see. A nice crisp aroma overall.

The taste is more distinct then what the aroma was indicating. A nice malt presence with more of a distinction with the pilsner malt, but still has some base malt characteristics. Little DMS and sulfar notes but ok for style. The hops are balanced well with the sweet malt flavor having that more distinctive Saaz flavor.

The body is light but the sweetness of the beer limits the crisp and dryness of the beer. Very easy to drink and enjoyable but more of an American style pilsner then Czech I would say.

Lagunitas version of a Pilsener, another good call.

This poured a bright orange with a puffy head that didn't last too long, left a bit of lacing and a slight ring around the glass. Smell is hoppy and malty, definitely a fuller body than a traditional Pils. It's like they took a Pils and kicked it up a bit, very full flavored, solid malt and hop flavor throughout. Very easy drinking, would make a good crossover beer for the non-BA types.

Another good Lagunitas offering. Keep them coming.

Appearance- Light straw like in color with a rich, dense creamy head. Very inviting beer.

Smell- Flowery, almost perfumy smell, hints of lavender?

Taste- Crisp, and dry with a distinctive hop presence, that is not overpowering but really drives the hop flavor to the forefront.

Mothfeel- Nice carbonation, with medium body. smooth and a subtle almost breadlike quality.

Drinkability- This is a delicious beer, Appropriate on a hot summer day, or anytime you need your thirst quenched. Makes me want to brew up 10 gallons of the stuff right now.

App: Pours with a 1 finger white head on a low carbonated light amber body, eventually settling to a thin layer with lots of lacing.

Smell: Crisp hops (american style I'm pretty sure) without any sort of malty backbone... inoffensive, but not appealing.

Taste: The hop presence hits me with a standard california grape-fruitiness. I was expecting more malt sweetness, but I can live with the pale-ale similarities of this pilsner. There is a slight fruitiness in the taste which is nice, but this doesn't strike me as being a good example of the pilsner style.

Mouthfeel: Swift bitterness that pass leaving an odd afterfeeling of bitter alcohol. An odd feeling on the aftertaste that doesn't do much to take away the scratchy texture on the swallow.

Drinkability: Not as easy to drink as most pilsners I've had, but not terrible.

Lagunitas Pils "Czech Style Pilsner" pours a light amber with a thin white head from a brown twelve ounce twist off bottle. The aroma is mild and malty. There is a very light body and active carbonation. There is a touch of malt and what seems like a nice bitter hop finish, but not much else. Not bad, worth a try.

12 oz. bottle, bought at the Hi-Times Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA,

A: Straw yellow, with a white head, good clarity and carbonation, above average pilsner feel.

S: Good floral aromatics from the Saaz hops, and some sweet malt, fragrant, it hits you right when you open the bottle.

T: Dry and bracing hop bitterness hits you, the malt character opens up after the initial hop blast, and is more vibrant and evident as the beer warms up.

M: Dry and crisp, though a little too bubbly for my tastes, overall, average.

D: A slightly above average pils for me, easy to drink, but nothing really special about it to make me crave another one.

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a golden yellow color with a white head that quickly turns into a thin white lace around the edge of the glass. The aroma is faint grassy malt. The taste is sweet malt with a nice little bite from the saaz hops. Overall, this is a pretty good pils that is recommended for a nice brew on a hot day.
