With the limited release of their Cappuccino Stout, Lagunitas Brewing Company based out of Petaluma, California has crafted a bottled up form of something one might have only been able to dream of. Their Cappuccino Stout offering is a brilliant coffee based stout that could serve as a leading example of what a good coffee stout should be.
With the brewing process actually taking coffee beans from Hard Core Coffee and infusing their high quality taste into the process, this stout offering certainly does not skimp on the coffee flavor. However, striking the right balance between the beer being "too coffee" and not enough beer is one that was essential to meet and thankfully Lagunitas Brewing Company has done just that.
The limited release offering of the Cappuccino Stout was found in a 22 ounce bomber and was poured into a pint glass.
The beer has a 7.99% ABV and is brewed in an American Stout tradition. Although the beer is apparently brewed year round and is available in bottles, I only seem to notice this beer from time to time and usually will only see it in the 22 ounce bomber bottle.
When poured, the Cappuccino Stout poured a dark brown to almost black color with an impressive amount of tan head that maintained itself well throughout the pint. The beer laced the glass the entire way down leaving the same noticeable tan to off-white lacing along the glass.
Once the bottle cap is removed, there is an immediate invitation to the coffee and chocolate smells noticed in the nose of the beer. The smell of the coffee awakens the palate nicely and truly leaves little to the imagination as to what will come next.
This stout has an excellent coffee taste to it and rightfully so does not maintain a burnt coffee taste like some coffee based stouts tend to not be able to get around. There is the perfect symbiosis created between the coffee and the roasted malt flavor of the beer. There is an interesting twist to this Cappuccino Stout in that there is a brief hint of hops noticed in the taste, as well.
For a stout, the Lagunitas Brewing Company Cappuccino Stout is certainly not the heaviest one out on the market and in fact maintains a rather medium body to it. This is a very smooth pour and drinking beer that does not leave the drinker with a heavy feeling post drink.
What truly makes the Cappuccino Stout a winner is that the taste has been crafted to highlight not just a great stout but also the brilliant infusion of coffee into this stout in a way that is unparalleled by some other brewers.
