Pours thinner than expected with a finger of light tan head that sees some nice lacing.
Not a big nose on this one. Smells mildly sweet with a faint whiff of coffee and roasted grains. There's also a hint of Sambuca-like booze.
First sip is a little thin with plenty of black coffee bitterness. Then the flavor rounds out with a sort of creaminess. There's some lactic tang (is lactose at work here?) and roasted barley. The dark, bitter coffee/chocolate flavors are concentrated in that inky sort of way that I enjoy in big stouts. A deep caramel richness develops which, coupled with sweet cream, results in a sweeter brew than most imperial coffee stouts.
Mouthfeel is creamy, despite its thinness in the glass. It really opens up on the palate and leaves a reasonably long sweet and roasty finish.
0verall this beer, like most Lagunitas products, is a great bargain. Big on taste -- like a milk stout on steroids, dosed with coffee -- but wont weigh you down. Doesn't drink like a 9.2% beer -- it goes down easy, but you'll feel your body start warming up pretty quickly.
