Was hoping for a big ol'foamy head that sits on top like a cappuccino, but this head is a small, silkier tan head that dissapates quickly down to a thin sheet. Very dark brown in color, much as coffee would be. The smell is creamy with a nice hint of coffeeovertop some dark roasted malts and a touch of milkiness. Nothing crazy, but pleasant.

The coffee tones come out beautifully in the flavor however. Big burst of bold dark roast coffee both in the front and then again in the back with a balanced middle of dark roasted malts that complements the coffee very well. A touch of earthier hops helps bring a nice bitter taste in the back as well, but doesn't interfere with the coffee. There is a nice fullness to the flavor without being overly thick in the mouthfeel. It still has a nice heft to it, but its smooth as can be without being overly creamy. The two major flavor combinations do very well together making for an excellent coffee stout, even if it isn't very complex. Its very drinkable and at 9% ABV, thats saying something. Good beer here, I definitely recommend if you like coffee stouts.

Bomber with a mid-February date into a Duvel tulip at cellar temp.

Look: fairly light brown for a stout, with a thick head that diminishes to a few wisps after a minute.

Smell: insane amounts of chocolate and coffee. Hint of roast, vanilla, tobacco, maybe slight dark fruit.

Taste: chocolate, coffee, mild piney hops, roast, bacon, slight harsh alcohol/bitterness.

Feel: medium body, extremely dry. Like drinking cotton balls.

Overall: this isn't the best coffee stout I've ever had, but with almost a year on it (I assume this is a 2015), there's still a ton of coffee, and it melds really well with the base beer. And at under $4 for the bomber, quite possibly the best value in the style. I'll put it this way: it's about 85% as good as Parabajava, for about 16% of the cost.

Appearance – This limited release stout poured a dark brown in color with some nice ruby highlights and a modest head that showed good retention.

Smell – Oh, does this smell good. The roasted malts are very dark and form a solid base for this stout. The cappuccino aroma is solid espresso and creamy milk. Somebody’s already added some raw sugar to this one as well. Overall the bouquet is very big and open.

Taste – Wow, this tastes actually bigger than it smells. The cappuccino flavors are enormous here. Add to that the big, roasty malt base and you have one helluva stout. I can pick up some complex fruity notes as well.

Mouthfeel – This one is almost full in the body. It is thick, thick, thick, and give a really hard core bitter coffee flavor on the back of the tongue.

Drinkability – If you live in Seattle and go to Starbucks three times a day like a lot of us do, this is the stout for you.

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away, I've got to
Get away from the pain you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn, I can't sleep at night

Re-release of 2014 vintage.

Pours dark copper/brown with small light tan head. Looks thin.

Rich aroma is full of coffee and chocolate, kind of sweet with maybe some dark fruits. Light carbonation and much more body than expected. This stout is creamy and really nice. Flavors are similar to the smell, but layered really nicely.

Mild bitterness and a touch of heat from the booze, but nothing sever. Overall I love this stout; I loved it last year and I think that its even better now.

1 Pint 6 Fluid Oz Bottle
Bottled on January 28th, 2014
Reviewed on March 13th, 2015
Served in a Nonic Pint Glass
(ABV 8.9% - 2014-2015 batch)

Eyes
Poured a rich dark brown body. A thick and creamy light tan head formed, about half of an inch in height. Sparse amount of bubbly lacing throughout.

Nose
Sweet and creamy malts. Modest notes of espresso, toasted grains, and chocolate. I personally found the overall aroma to be somewhat compact. Everything was there, just didn't seem like the volume was turned up all of the way.

Mouth
Creamy notes of coffee, cream, and toasted grains hit the tongue immediately. Sweeter milky notes set the overall tone for the flavor. Bitter notes developed towards the finish... dark chocolate, dark roast espresso, and a subtle presence of alcohol. The bitter notes were canceled by the creamy malt backbone. Full-bodied. Moderate/Low carbonation.

Overall
Excellent coffee-infused stout. The drinkability for such a dense, high ABV beer is pretty outstanding.

This is the best flavored stout I've had in ages. It tastes like a stout with the flavor of the grain not overwhelmed with sweetness and coffee flavor. It is true to the form but very nicely flavored. The cappuccino moniker is appropriate because there is a certain creamy flavor not sure if it's brewed with milk but tastes like it. This is a well balanced beer. My only criticism is I wish it had a heftier mouth feel. If you enjoy a flavored stout but don't go in for all the sweet crap most breweries are producing, this is for you!

I've had this in my beercellar since april 2013 - Now 2 years later it's time to open it!

Great nose: Coffee, chocolate, dark bread, mocha.
Taste of coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate, pumpernickel, dark fruit and some vanilla. Very smooth!
Medium to full body and light carbonation.

This was very good two years ago and it still is! The years in the cellar has done the beer just good.

Appearance- Mostly black in color with a very dark brown hue as well. Pours a thick four finger width head that is tan in color.

Aroma- Coffee, vanilla, roasted malt, and milk chocolate.

Taste- Coffee bitterness is present at first and into the finish. The coffee gives way for moment to vanilla and chocolate flavors which balance out the coffee and roasted malts nicely. The finish sees more coffee bitterness along with the coffee/vanilla sweetness.

Feel- Medium/ full bodied, creamy, medium carbonation.

Overall- Pretty much nails everything for a coffee stout with big roasty coffee flavors, but enough sweetness to balance it out. Definitely in the ball park of the likes of an FBS, but not quite as good. For the price and quality this is a great beer.

From fridge at coop for <$5, walked a couple of blocks and poured into pint glass.
My bottle displays 8.9% ABV, IBU 29.5, OG1076.
A: Dark mahagony with inch thick tan cratered head. Tasty. Carb spires seen throughout.
S: oats, malt, subtle dark chocolate
T: Can't tell @ first (probably too cool yet). Some moderate effervescence on the finish and a little acidic bitterness that I wasn't expecting - the alcohol peeped through a little.
M: Medium fullness with a slight tongue fizz
- Let sit for a few and the profile mellowed a bit; the bitterness was not as sharp and a little fullness was lost as well.

Poured a new full glass and let it sit while making dinner.
S: Coffee notes were more pronounced though still subtle, dark chocolate and roasted oats.
T and M: That's nice. Smooth and easy with a light dark chocolate/coffee bittersweet-ness that trails to the finish and subsequent swallows. Medium fullness. The alcohol was not felt in the taste.
O: Damn I should have not been too eager. I'm not sure about the cappuccino part - it's not that sweet - but there is some coffee and bittersweet presence. Let this one sit to enjoy...but not too long.

Its great to see more and more Lagunitas brews showing up here in wny, poured a deep but not pitch black there was ruby highlights shown thru out when held up to the light a well formed one finger mocha colored head atop.Big espresso roast coffee aromas and dry unsweetened chocolate lingers, roasted to the hilt flavors somewhat earthy in the finish but the coffee flavors really steal the show.A light earthiness in the finish rounds out the beer nicely,if you like big roasted uncompremising stouts this is for you and with the alcohol very well hidden it goes down easily.

Pours a deep brown color, murky and swampy with some light shining through around all of the edges. Seemingly low carbonation with a little, light-tan head that leaves minimal lacing at best. Aroma is full of some boozy chocolate; the alcoholic character comes off as bourbon-like. Creamy vanilla notes in the background, along with more cocoa dust and maybe even oak chips. Taste is, as expected, very chocolatey and oaky; woody and vanilla notes throughout. Some deep espresso comes out about halfway through and hits heavy against the roof of my mouth - bitter and dark. The cocoa powder flavor takes on a bittersweet character and that entwines with the light floral profile of the beer - very light and ashy hops hide in the background. As it gets warmer, the booze gets stronger and the woody notes become more defined. It's funny, this almost takes on a bourbon barrel aged flavor profile, even though it's not. Medium-thick mouth feel, slightly syrupy and a touch sticky; very low carbonation.

Overall, not as good as I was expecting, perhaps my expectations for Lagunitas have been put up too high based on their other brews. Still a very solid stout, but I would've liked more of a heavy coffee flavor and maybe less of a bourbon burn.

To set the table, I love this brewery and style of brew. I will be biased high in my review. I wish this stuff came in 6-packs and was readily available.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into an English pint glass. Released a nice brown head that settled pretty quickly into a rocky foam. Nose consists of sweet malt with some dark notes of chocolate and coffee. Some raisin notes with dark currant and bread present later.

The sweetness promised in the aroma and by the OG (stated on the bottle) is just not present. There is a definite coffee flavor in the malt with chocolate notes, but the supporting sweetness expected in the malt fails to appear, leaving a slight bitter flavor sensation but for my taste that's perfect.

Finish is long coffee and alcohol dominate the malt that is present. Hop bitter is there and balances along with bitter coffee and chocolate. Really its balanced but not necessarily with hop. Kinda cool. The lack of malt sweetness lessens the need for a heavy bitter and this beer actually responds to that need with a nice complex but mild bitter from multiple sources.

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass

A vigorous pour down the center on the glass produced just a small layer of bubble head which quickly dissipated to a small ring of bubbles. It poured a very dark brown with a brilliant ruby color shining through the edges.

It smelled of sweetened coffee with some powdered chocolate notes. Not nearly as strong as many of the other coffee stouts I have had.

The taste has a distinct roasty coffee flavor but it is noticeably lacking any of the bitterness which makes other coffee stouts come across a little harsh. It also is completely neutral in flavor on the backside which is interesting. Once again many other coffee stouts leave a bitter coffee taste through the whole thing but this one is only on the front end. I like that a lot but I only wish the coffee taste was a little stronger.

Mouthfeel is great. Not nearly as sweet as many others of a similar gravity in the style. It shows no hint of the 9+% ABV. The neutral flavored back end makes this beer insanely drinkable.
