Poured from a large 1 pint 6 oz. brown bottle with a variation of the Old Testament's 23rd Psalm on the label. "Coffee is my shepherd, I shall not doze. It maketh me to wake up in green pastures ... and it goes on from there with both some clever and some not so clever lines ending with ... and I will dwell in the house of cappuccino forever". With all the space taken up for the psalm I guess they didn't have any room left to put on a freshness date or best consumed by date so I have no idea if this was an old or new sample. The color is dark coffee brown with some red tinting held to light and it made a huge light brown head that lasted awhile and left some nice lacing on my glass as I drank it.
The smell is not overpowering but what I could get out of it was cold coffee with a touch of roasted malt, a touch of chocolate, and even a touch of hops.
The taste had all the flavors of the smell with the only surprise being the amount of hoppiness that comes thru which gives this a bit of a bittersweet chocolate, cappuccino, and malt flavor. There is something else in here giving it some sweetness too - perhaps some caramel malts to go with the roasted ones.
The mouthfeel is only medium thick and the carbonation is low, so this is an easy drinker. The alcohol is pretty well hidden for being nearly 8% as I only found a trace of it in the aftertaste. Overall a good tasting stout but not a great one.
