In Berkeley, out of a pint.

A: Cappuccino-esque for sure. Two-finger head off the pour, settling to a thin, but dense layer. Some excellent, thick lacing. The color is a little lighter than other great stouts, but it's not bad. Inviting.

S: Wonderfully coffee forward, with some chocolate malts pulling through and some hop hints showing up fashionably late. Sweet and malty.

T: The taste turns the nose on its end, with the hop bitters the first through the door (and hanging around throughout), followed closely by some roasted bready malts, light tobacco, green apple acetaldehyde, and the coffee of course. The coffee could be more pronounced and the hops toned down a little bit longer, but it's still a very enjoyable beer. Pretty complex.

M: Nearly perfect. Chewy, a tad dry, with a touch of warmth from the alcohol and close to no carbonation.

22oz bomber poured into a Deschutes snifter. I believe this a fall 2011 bottle, but I am not sure.

A: This isn't even black? It pours a dark brown with reddish hues. I almost think I can see through at the bottom. Basically no head. A ring of tan around the edges. Some carbonation and alcohol feet. Swirl gets me tan tight bubbled head.

S: A nice brewed coffee aroma on the nose. Behind that I get some chocolate.

T: Obviously coffee flavors up front. Nice medium smooch roast bitterness on the front of the palate. Then you get some smooth milk chocolate notes. It's very pleasant actually.

M: I'll go full bodied, but appearance is surprising.

O: B for sure.

My thanks to ThaFATkid for sending this bottle.

Poured extremely dark mahogany into a tulip. Very, very dark, but when held up to the light there is a tiny bit of ruby red light peeking through. Fairly low carbonation yields a thin light tan head. Faint nose of toast and coffee and a slight hint of vanilla.

Flavor is excellent. Toasted malt with nice figgy flavors quickly joined by a nice rush of coffee and bitter chocolate. The creaminess of the malt complements the coffee nicely and the beer is well-balanced and not bitter. The brewer asserts on their `virtual tasting' on Youtube that this beer tastes like beer and not coffee. I concur. The hops are mostly prevalent in the back of the palate and lend a spiciness to the beer that is like added ginger or allspice. Mouthfeel is firm-to-creamy even though the beer is not excessively rich and thick.

This is not the best coffee stout I've had, but it is very, very good. Fans of coffee stouts should try this.

A shade lighter than pitch black with a nice tan head. Nose is of roasted malts, coffee, some faint vanilla. Tastes exactly like it smells, primarily lots of coffee and a lingering bitterness. The hops compliment the bitterness from the coffee and it really all comes together. Dangerously drinkable at 8.8% abv.

Solid all-around beer that's worth picking up if you come across it, but I wasn't blown away by any means.
