A: Deep black that's a ruby red up to light. A very light brown head that builds and dies quickly. Slight lacing and head retention.

S: Heavy coffee, espresso w/ sugar, molasses, dark roasted malt, bittersweet coffee. A very sweet nose.

T: When I took the first massively coffee sip I thought, "Please don't be like Bell's Java Stout." Luckily, the intense coffee flavor mellowed out. There's dark, roasted malt, freshly roasted espresso beans, burnt sugar, and bittersweet chocolate. Some booze, too, but that's expected.

M: Medium carbonation that sizzles on the palate. Coffee/espresso never becomes cloying or overpowering, which I expected after the first few sips.

O: A good version of a coffee stout. Still has plenty of stout behind all that coffee. Recommended.

Served from bomber into Duvel tulip.

Pours a black color with a fluffy light brown head. Head is roughly a finger or just over that. Appears to have low carbonation.

Aroma is slightly more subdued than I had hoped for. Coffee is definitely the dominant aroma here. There is a little bit of roastiness, caramel, and creamy milk chocolate behind it. Not really any hop aroma to speak of.

Up front is a burst of coffee, slight chocolatey sweetness, and a tingle of carbonation. Transitions into a fairly dry roast which dominates the middle. The finish rounds up the coffee again and a ever so slight bitterness. Slight bit of warming alcohol too.

Mouthfeel has a prick of carbonation and good full body. Pretty drinkable for 9%, but good as a sipper.

A good coffee beer. Doesn't try to blast you in the face with coffee like FBS, but its a nicely balanced beer that I could see drinking at least once every winter, especially for the price. A good buy that won't disappoint.

650ml bottle poured into tulip 11/1/12

A dark cola with a short lived finger of foam that leaves no lace

S smells just like the coffee candy I get at my favorite Vietnamese restaurant, there's a little spiciness and I'm not sure from what, faint milk chocolate

T a little char on the finish and burnt coffee, not quite as good as the nose

M a little thin for a 9% stout but not too bad, a little creamy from the bubbles and a little heat but all things considered decent

O not a bad beer but I'm not blown away by it, could use some more body and it's pretty straight forward, still pretty decent but not up there with the better stuff I've had from these guys

I like coffee as much as the next guy so give this one a go if you feel the same way

Appearance? Yup, it's a stout for sure. Nice black body and thick tan head on top. Some rings of lace left behind.

Nice freshly brewed coffee aroma up front. Some fruitiness in there as well and a bit of a sweeter malt side.

Rich and roasty coffee flavors pair with with a sweeter and slightly toasty biscuity flavor. Some berry fruit flavors mixed in make for a nice coffee-forward flavor while still retaining some resemblance of stout.

Mouthfeel is rich and quite creamy. Overall, Lagunitas presents you with a thoroughly enjoyable coffee stout that makes for quite a nice nightcap.

Presentation: Bomber bottle poured into a Cigar City tulip glass. I can't believe I have never reviewed this as I do remember having it. A very good value at less than six dollars for the bomber. Poured and enjoyed right out of the refrigerator.

Appearance: On the darker side of brown but nowhere near pitch black. Not much head turns into no lacing.

Aroma: Roasted coffee beans and chicory notes upfront. Very interesting coffee tones, but they are really nice too. A little caramel and sweet brown sugar backing.

Taste: The coffee flavor is unlike most other coffee beers. I got a lot of roast on the beans and a bit of chicory. This really stands out. Nicely balanced with sweet malt to balance out the bitter beans. Really drinkable and smooth.

Mouthfeel: Pretty full mouthfeel for a coffee stout. Nice and creamy.

Overall, a really nice coffee stout with one of a kind flavors. Really affordable and easy to get too. I really don't remember liking this so much. I'll get this again for sure.

Pours dark brown, frothy tan head.

Sweet aroma, faintly acrid but then some acidity comes through in the smell. There is a mild roast scent underneath.

The first sip is rich and very roasty. I taste chocolate at first, then an acidic roast flavor comes in and dominates. It tastes like fresh, high grade coffee served black. You can really pick up the acidity from the coffee beans. There is just enough hop bitterness to make you forget they're even in there.

A sweet, malty body backs the whole thing up and it washes away cleanly at the end.

Poured from their bomber...

Appearance - Pours about a finger of tan mocha head which quickly dissipates to a cap, color of the beer is a translucent deep red cherrywood.

Smell - Dark roast coffee, dark fruits, molasses, touch of dark chocolate and soy sauce.

Taste - Starts with semisweet dark coffee and dark fruits with a touch of amaretto & cherry, at the back I get semisweet dark chocolate and a touch of sour plum peel, finishes with dark fruit pits, coffee grounds and toasted pumpernickel crust. There is a semi-sweet coffee backbone throughout the entire sip. The 9% ABV is completely hidden.

Mouthfeel - This is a nearly medium bodied beer that is lightened a bit by medium carb. The carb provides tingle and some cleansing at the end of the sip, it also ushers in the slight sour/dry finish.

Overall - These are really good flavors here, the balance and complexity here are nice, but it just all seems a bit lighter than it should for a 9% Imperial Stout, I expected bigger and bolder flavors here. The biggest coffee presence is actually experienced between sips, there is definitely a black coffee aftertaste going on. Glad I tried this, and I love Lagunitas offerings, but this may be my least favored so far. I like it, just don't love it.

P-Dont know what the dog on the label is about but...ok.

A-Semi black, ive seen darker. Got a decent amount of head. About a finer. Looks solid and and rustic.

S-Well it smells like chocolate and vanilla coffee. Little stints of toffee as well. Has a nice dark esspresso smell.

T-Lots of dark chocolate and coffee. Get like an italion dark bold coffee bean flavor. The sweetness comes out towards the end. Somewhat of a vanilla. Little bit of smoke in there but nothing big.

M-Probably a medium bodied beer. Not to heavy. Has a dry finish and leaves a stale palate. Carbonation is good and high. Lots of flavors and good.

O-Good beer, nothing super special. Could be good with some aging. Wish the flavors would stand out a little more. Overall pretty decent.

I had this in between 2 very tough beers to compete with Mikkeller beek geek B-fast and Founders B-fast Stout and the two biggest gripes I had in comparison were sweetness and mouthfeel. It pour on the slightly flat side, but did not feel flat at all. It felt a but watery especially for a near 9% beer. It was sweeter than the other two coffee stouts and the coffee flavor was weakest of the trio. It was too crisp for me. Maybe if I added sugar and half n half this might be a delicious frappuccino.
