It came to be a bright ruby red, with a nicely sculpted off-white head that dwindled soon after the first sip. Delicate lacing graced the sides of the glass.
The aroma delivered the hops in grand fashion, with citrusy swirls of pine and floral air. A broad-shouldered but indistinct malt sweetness punched through in spots, but lay well to the rear.
Upon sipping, the toasty malt made its first and strongest play for attention, with a berry sweetness that slid into a more sugary character as it lost ground to the burgeoning hops. And once the hops laid claim, they flexed their resinous muscles to dominate with pine, citrus, and grapefruit notes. What was left of the malt at that point was a breif glimmer of alcohol warmth with its ensuing dryness, further separating the hops from the malt presence. I'm not one who clings to balance as some kind of mantra, but the malt just made too brief a showing here.
Medium bodied, it occupied the mouth well, but the clingy oil of the hops numbed the palate before long.
I know that this is not the highest IBU brew out there, but the hops just laid heavy over the malt body, giving it just enough exposure to tantalize, but not enough to be able to savor. And that's a shame, because the malt spine of the beer did tease with some worthwhile elements worthy of further exploration and discovery. But, the hops, and their rather simplistic bittering result, just weren't interesting enough to be the headliner. Nothing offensive here, and it IS drinkable, on the surface, but considering I can get hops lots of places, and often with something a bit more going on in partnership, I'd have to say it was enough of a disappointment that I won't be dipping back into this well unless it was pretty much devoid of real competition.

Lagunitas Imperial Red
Appearance: light nut brown, medium head, and good lacing.
Smell: fruity hops and a very light grain.
Taste: whole hop, nice malts, and a light citrus.
Mouthfeel: medium and smooth.
This is nice brew. The hops are up front and immediately followed by nice warm malts. The hops give off a whole cone flavor, while being very balanced in itself. The hops were added in the right amounts at the right times.
