Been looking forward to this beer awhile.

Nice orange/ amber color. Some alcohol legs, a touch of lacing. The colors match nicely with the packaging. +

Wow, smells so nice. Some of that world class Lagunitas hop profile, with a touch of "big malt". It's hard to describe. The malt presence makes the hop nose feel intense and scary. Not too strong though. Reminds me of the Imperial Red.

Wow, it's so smooth. Right away you get that bitterness that blends perfectly with the juiciness of the hops and strong malt backbone, but nothing overwhelming. The alcohol is noticeable right away and adds a spicy bitterness across your tongue. Decent aftertaste.

If it were a touch less alcoholic/ malty, this would be a huge IIPA. It reminds me a lot of Bigfoot, but less intense. To be honest, I think I like this one better. Much more approachable.

I don't get any of that "brown shugga". But perhaps the brown sugar is adding some of the sweetness and alcohol touch.

A: Lighter than I thought it was going to be. A pumpkin orange with some extra red color in there. Little head but the lacing stays and does not dissipate.

S: Surprisingly light. Some light sweetness and a bit of fruityness or floral note.

T: It's nicely balanced but overall a bit dull. Hops hit nicely at first but fade into a but of dull bitterness. Alcohol adds more that takes away giving a kiss of sweetness and twang. Some residual sweetness but really not overly powerful in general.

M: Sits like it's going to kick your ass but then doesn't. Agressive carbonation and alcohol given the relative thinness of the beer. A quick swig goes nicely but letting it linger is pretty rough.

Overall a pretty nice beer. It drinks a lot like an imperial IPA given a big hop bitterness and some overall floral notes. It's not a bad beer but it's overall pretty weak not bringing any big bold flavors.

Picked up a fresh bottle for my first taste of brown shugga. Poured into beer flute.

Appearance is light brown to amber, with ample head. Smell is of of light brown sugar and surprisingly ample hops. Taste is also heavy hops, with a slight brown sugar finish, akin to a DIPA without any citrus notes. Brown sugar does become more apparent as the beer warms, however the hoppiness does seem to dominate the flavor profile. Mouthfeel is great for the style, not overly heavy or light.

Overall a good beer but a little too unbalanced to be considered a great or go to beer for the style. Try it out, but there are much better offerings from Lagunitas.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a CCB pint glass.

A: Pours a glowing deep copper in color, almost clear. Forms a one finger white head over the top of a good amount of visible carbonation.

S: Sweet malts, roasted caramel, and some pine hop bitterness. Overall a little boozy on the nose.

T: Sweet caramel, some fruitiness, brown sugar, and sweet roasted malt. A bit boozy, although this is balanced with pine & citrus pith hops on the tongue.

M: Medium to slightly heavy body. Alcohol heat is certainly present. A bit lower carbonation sensation than I would prefer.

O: A good winter beer. I enjoyed this very much. Recommended.
