Copper in color with a perfectly clear body, Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale is a bold brew that offers a solid head of foam and a nose that is spicy, hoppy, and a little bit fruity with some hints of pine cones. There is less citrus in the nose than with other west- coast ales, but the scent of citrus is there, hidden behind the scents of pine and spice.
The main flavors present in this ale include caramelized malt along with piney hops and a slightly toasted malt character. Citrus taste is present as well- mostly grapefruit- followed by a dry finish. This ale is medium in body and well- balanced between hops and malt.
Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale is certainly not a light bodied beer, but this one isn't necessarily full- bodied, either. Considering the alcohol content, I expected something much fuller in taste. But the medium body takes nothing away from this beer. The same is true with the alcohol content. It is higher than average and thus I expected more of an alcoholic bite. But there is surprisingly little bite, and this is a testament to the brewing of this ale. The people at Lagunitas seemed to get everything at just the right balance to eliminate most of the flavor of strong alcohol. If anything, it is the hops that supply the bite.
In summary, Lagunitas Lucky 13 is a delicious ale and one I will certainly purchase again if I get the chance. It is certainly a beer worth sampling and savoring, and I recommend getting your hands on a bottle while the product is still available on the store shelves.

Gotta love the label graphic - nicely done
Looks like this was bottled about April 23rd 2013, so it's got a lot of age on it now! Bought at the end of last September and mistakenly aged. That might explain why it came across as more of an ESB than an American amber.
Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into a Samuel Adams nonick.
a: Nearly clear dark amber/copper with an inch plus offwhite head which receded to rocky surface foam and dense lacing.
s: Mild caramel malt.
t; First impression is its pleasing silky smoothness, followed by a nice caramel malt and hops balance. Sweet to dry finish. Its 8.65% ABV is well concealed.
m: Medium, silky smooth.
o: A very enjoyable and satisfying ESB-style ale, highly sippable and savory in texture and overall taste. I'd buy this again anytime of year. However I'll need to try a much fresher bottle to confirm this.
