Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.
Appearance: nice amber-brown hue with a bit of haze and a finger of pillowy ivory foam. It looks pretty good.
Smell: huge maltiness with earthy, citrusy hops sitting atop. It's got that strong ale vibe going on that Lagunitas does so well.
Taste: giant maltiness with a rough, stinging hop character that fades into a bizzarely fruity flavor. This is a big ass beer which deploys an excellently dynamic flavor. What is it with these guys and their strong ales? Like Stone, they simply deliver. Great stuff (though, as mentioned, this is more of a strong ale than an amber/red ale).
Mouthfeel: big ass body plus a decent carbonation yields big ass creaminess. This is actually along the lines of a great Belgian. I am surprised and impressed by this offering.
Drinkability: hugely drinkable, given the ABV. The flavors are strong and intense, yet this beer manages to not completely overwhelm the palate. If I thought I could survive drinking this as a session beer, I would.

Gotta love the label graphic - nicely done
Looks like this was bottled about April 23rd 2013, so it's got a lot of age on it now! Bought at the end of last September and mistakenly aged. That might explain why it came across as more of an ESB than an American amber.
Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into a Samuel Adams nonick.
a: Nearly clear dark amber/copper with an inch plus offwhite head which receded to rocky surface foam and dense lacing.
s: Mild caramel malt.
t; First impression is its pleasing silky smoothness, followed by a nice caramel malt and hops balance. Sweet to dry finish. Its 8.65% ABV is well concealed.
m: Medium, silky smooth.
o: A very enjoyable and satisfying ESB-style ale, highly sippable and savory in texture and overall taste. I'd buy this again anytime of year. However I'll need to try a much fresher bottle to confirm this.
Serving type: growler
