So one more beer on the wanted list is killed and consumed. Picked up the bomber on my trip to Atlanta, GA. I am a huge IPA/DIPA fan. But at the moment, I guess i am going through what they call Lupulin threshold shift. So my review might be biased on the lower side of things.
Poured from 22 oz bottle into large snifter.
A two finger thick white colored head. Disappears into a thin white layer. Just decent lacing left by the fading head. Otherwise the lacing is below normal. Pale golden in color. Very clear. Some bubbles.
As soon as the cap is just half open, the hop burst enters the nose. Flowery, citrus and resin aroma is pretty obvious. A comparatively good overall strength that stays almost the same and does not fade away. Very characteristic of an IPA aroma. Malt is apparent as well, but subdued to some extent by grassy and citrusy hops.
I expected more bitterness at 102 IBU, but did not get that. It still is very hop forward. A good amount of bitterness enters the mouth and hits the tongue. Some malt backbone as usual. Very well hidden alcohol, though 8% is not that high. ABV is not felt in either nose or taste. A very good hoppy bitter aftertaste. No room for malty sweetness. Leaves the palate dry.
Medium bodied mouth feel. A lot of oily character may be due to resin or piney hops. Very smooth. Slight astringency due to hops, but i did not feel it. Very moderate carbonation. Drinks really easy.
A nice brew overall. Well worth the hype/reputation. Only thing i missed was may be some bitterness at 102. Sad for me. I will need to revisit this.

Julian dating on the 22oz bomber revealed to be from May 20th (so almost 2 months on this by the time I cracked it open and poured it into the tulip glass). Might have wanted it a bit fresher, but that is no news flash. 1 and 1/2 fingers of white head which dissipated quickly and left some nice lacing. Interesting tangerine hue in the light, very tempting. Aromas of pine, grapefruit, and bitterness (yes, bitterness... this IS a 102 IBU brew!). Pine notes on the front wave of the taste profile, along with a citrusy (almost lemony) mid-note, with a big bitter finish. Continual carbonation, refreshing mouthfeel, and a slightly oily presence on the back end. This had a nice balance for a big beer, and though I was v. happy... would have to try one that was super fresh to make this a go-to choice.
