Hop awesome is more like it! There is a distinct pear and tangerine aroma. Same follows into the flavor with a very refreshing, but, dry bitter finish. Yet another excellent brew from Lagunitas.

Not bad. Definitely hop forward and a decent flavor. Not really fruity or grassy or malty. Kind of a mix. They did a good job hiding the alcohol. Just a slight warming sensation, I'm ok with that.

Cloudy in a slowly swirly mystical golden pour with thin white top. Fruit and malt aromas aren't my favorite. Wow, though, the flavor is semi-sweet and malty with only a pleasant bitterness of some resin, and a super-clean finish. So balance. Much tasty.

Great beer! Still seems very hoppy, although I cannot find a date on the bottle. I'm not sure if Lagunitas dates thier beers, but they should. Atleast date IPA/ hop forward style beers, to ensure the consumer gets them nice and fresh and hoppy!

I'm mad at myself for never drinking this beer before now. It's pretty much one of those perfect DIPAs. The most surprising aspect is the bitterness completely disappears after each sip. As usual Lagunitas shows off west coast style perfectly.

Poured from a bottle into a pint

A. Pours a sudsy 2 finger head. Transparent golden yellow. Nice head retention. Confetti lacing covering the head omission.

S. Nice pineapple, banana, strawberry aroma and some sweet bready malt.

T. Agreeing with the nose I get banana and strawberry hop presence which reminds me of Nelson Sauvin. Little bitterness. Grassy note on the back end.

M. Light carbonation and light to medium body (3 on a scale 1-10). Some dry finish.

O. A good IPA especially for the price ($3.99 22oz). For that price it's a steal. An DIPA with good flavor that is almost sessionable on a hot summer day. One of the lighter DIPA's i've had and that's the reason I say it's sessionable even for a DIPA. It's just easy drinking. No inyour face bitterness. Not heavy. Just a nice tasty DIPA.

Pours a dark yellow almost orange with a fizzy head that laces the glass. The smell is full of grapefruit and pine as well as some herby, almost grass scents. The taste was a love note to hops which are very much center stage in this beer. Good amount of flavor throughout, just wish the finish was a little cleaner but a must try for any hop heads.

Bottled on January 8th, 2015. Poured from a bomber into a tulip.

A: Pours a golden color with a 2 finger head of white foam. After a minute or 2 the head fades to a thin film that leaves a few tiny spots of lacing.

S: Pungent aromas of spicy, zesty hops with a kind of grassy smell to it. A bit of piney hop aromas as well. The nose of this beer is pretty one dimensional as all I'm really getting is earthy/herbal hops that are almost unbearable.

T: Flavors of dank, spicy hops and a good amount of pine. Once again very one dimensional, with no malt detectable whatsoever.

M: Medium body with high carbonation and a bold, crisp mouthfeel. There is a high amount of bitterness that leaves a long, lingering finish on the palate.

O: I am a big fan of double IPAs, however I was not a fan of this beer. It is the definition of a "hop bomb" that doesn't have much balance at all. There is no malt detectable whatsoever, and in my opinion this hurts the beer by making it very unbalanced to the point of being almost undrinkable. At first I thought maybe the beer was spoiled, but the code of 008 5 on the neck of the bottle shows it was bottled on January 8th, 2015 (5 weeks ago). I guess I'm just not a fan of this one. Maybe I'll give it another go sometime down the road, but I probably wouldn't drink this beer again.

Poured sideways into tulip. Medium head with tremendous resurgence upon agitation. Amber/Orange in color. Aromatics were largely floral and piney with a medium hint of sweet maltiness on ~3rd smell. Tremendous pine and citrus capacity with underlying floral notes. Medium body with a lingering spritz carbonation (especially after agitation). Overall, a fantastic, richly bitter beer that does the job. Cheers!

pours a great amber color with a solid white head.

smells like a dry bitter hop.

the taste isn't super complex, this is my 2nd time trying this and it has improved but is still not fantastic. it goes down smooth but the taste could be better. i felt this way the last time i tried this beer and after seeing it in the dIPA top 115 i gave it another try. i'm not surprised it's a top 40 dIPA but i've had more enjoyable dIPAs for sure.

solid dIPA especially at $5-$6 per 22oz. would prefer other dIPAs but not a bad year round choice. for a beer that is $6 per 22oz this is a great value. enjoyable dIPA

Poured into a plastic cup at Mardi Gras. ($5.29 bomber at Steins)

A: Golden amber with an off-white one finger head that lingers. Nice lacing.

S: Grapefruit, piney hops, citrus action.

T: Hops are stupid, as advertised. Grapefruit-y citrus with a bit of orange. Medium bitterness. Smooth, semi-sweet. An easy drinker.

M: Medium with medium, carbonation and a dry finish.

O: Another winner from the doggie in California. Not my favorite IPA, but a hophead's delight, for sure.

Had forgotten how good this is, and in these days of $10+ bombers what a great value it remains.

Pungent, dank hops-- a bit more of the onion-y style than I remember (But I like that!). This is in contrast to the more fruity hops of Sucks.

What's old is new and what's new is old... definitely bringing this back as a go-to DIPA for me.

22oz bomber poured into snifter

Appearance: pours light copper translucent color with some visible carbination. White 1.5 finger head. Some alcohol lacing

Aroma: orange and grapefruit at first. More like ruby red grapefruit juice. Sweet smelling

Taste: nice sweet hoppy taste, juicy grapefruit hop flavor. Some resinous flavor as well. Not too bitter for a double ipa. Sweetness balances it out nicely.

Mouthfeel. Medium body light lingering carbination.

Overall: at 5.99 for a bomber of a beer this quality it's a tremendous value. Reminds me of sucks a lot in some ways. Just a delicous solid double ipa

Ok this is the second time I have come here and bumped this beer up. This is by far the smoothest DIPA I have ever had. This is going on my dangerous beer list as I find myself drinking it way too fast

Finally doing a proper review for this one after drinking it for over a year now.

This bomber was bottled 7/2/15. Reviewed 8/13/15

Pours a mainly transparent deep gold color with a huge, billowing, foamy off-white head. Looks like the result of a Cancun bar foam party. It leaves lacing like it's going out of style. Very sticky

The aroma still doesnt wow me, but very good. A little bit of skunkiness, slight resinous pine hops, and sweet caramel malts.

The taste more than makes up for anything lacking in the aroma department. Big hoppy pine notes, grapefruit, slightly herbal, and fresh grains.

Very thick and resinous. A little bit of sting in the nostrils, but not from alcohol.

I have always said it is a toss up between this, Sucks, and Sumpin Extra, but as time goes by, this one is starting to become my leader of the pack.

Ok, so I am going to probably get slammed for saying this but here goes. This beer was awful. Heard all the hype. I don't know, maybe I got a bad bomber? The taste was so bad I spilled this out! Not even in the same league as other American DIPA's. In my opinion, American DIPA's rank in this order. 1. Heady Topper (duh). 2. Lawson's Double Sip of Sunshine. 3. Russian River Pliny the Elder. 4. Neshaminy Creek's The Hops of Things to Come. 5. Ballast Point Sculpin. Skip this. If you can get your hands on any of the others I listed, get it. Cheers!

Bomber poured into a Belgian style tulip glass.

Appearance: Looks really good in the glass, poured kind of hazy, but cleared, very bright white head, nice lacing, some bubble stream. This the beer's strength.

Aroma: Big hop, citrusy aromas on the nose, smells really good.

Taste: Compared to the nose the taste is not as citrusy. I was expecting more from the taste but it's a letdown. A small hop citrusy flavor, then some malt, bitterness finishes it up.

Overall: After smelling the nose I was awaiting a big juicy citrusy hop bomb but all I got was a minor juicy citrusy hop flavor, some malt and bitterness. Really disappointed in the flavor but then again this could be an old bottle as I don't see any dates on it. I've had IIPAs that have lost their hop flavors and I think this bottle might be old.

This beer is as advertised - it has crazy amounts of hop bitterness. It needed the malt balance of a double IPA in order to prevent your mouth from completely closing shut at the astringency of the extreme hop profile. I tend not to rate the 90+ IBU beers quite as highly as Ba's gen pop and this one is no exception.

Pours a bright murky dark straw colour with fluffy white head that dissipates and leaves some lacing.

Nose hits you in the face with hops. Citrus grapefruit and sweet malt but the hops are overwhelming.

Taste is a juicy citrus beginning with a nice bitter finish.

Excellent. I think I prefer Sucks but this is really good.

A- bright, clear honey golden brew. Two fingers of gorgeous, dense white head with excellent retention. Clumpy lacing. Lots of visible, fast moving bubbles.

S- holy hops. Lots of pine and citrus. Biscuity malt backbone with a strong aroma of caramel.

T- light pine up front, which is quickly washed away by a clean citrus mid palate. The finish is still very citrus heavy with a hind of bready malt.

M- very clean. Highly carbonated, it foams up on contact with the tongue. Medium bodied.

O- really enjoyable. I'll be drinking this one again in the near future.

Pouring from a bottle reveals a deep copper with lasting large yellow foam head. Smell is strongly citrus. Mouthfeel is light and delicate. Taste - hoppy, citrus, flowery but almost nothing in the bitterness department. 8% ABC is balanced well.

So far my opinion of this beer is a hoppy citrusy dry IPA without much body or complexity. Definitely would be a go-to beer at an average restaurant or bar, but with all the great IPA's in california I don't think this one stands out to me in particular.

As soon as i popped the cap hops showed up in the room, so this should be great.
Pours hazy orange, small sticky head, slowly receding.
Smells greatly hoppy, lots of pine, hop oil, a hint of dankness, pineapple, tangerine and peach, faint kiwi, sweetened with possibly sticky-sweet caramel malt. A big bucket of leafy hops, in short.
Fruity hops in the front, lots of tangerine, bittersweet pink grapefruit, maracuja, faint lychee, mango, faint melon. All thrown on a mild caramel canvas, not that sticky, being immediately followed/pummeled by huge pine resin, green, gooey hop extract, really concentrated, really bitter and quite dry.
Good thing about it is that quite some flavor passes through to the aftertaste, after a long very bitter finish. There's a nice tropical note (mango, pineapple syrup), a bit of malt sweetness (just enough) and nice grapefruit peel. Aside the ton'o'hops, that is. Medium body, prickly carbonation (spot on), a bit of alcohol warmth.
A huge bitter Imperial IPA packed with tons of flavor, nicely layered, refreshing, straight to the top.
