12oz bottle poured into a milkshake pilsner glass. Batch/date stamps on the neck and bottom, but what they mean isn't obvious to me.
Appearance: Hazy tarnished copper with an off-white to light tan head on the top. The head is quite thin, and is bit thicker at the edges. Tiny islands and very thin delicate strands of lacing noted, but not very persistent.
Smell: Quite malty, with a smell of grapes (reminds me a bit of a doppelbock). With a swirl, I can pull out some orange citrus hops, but not a lot. Still quite malt forward.
Taste: Malty again. Caramel, sweetness, white grape juice all tempered with some pine-like resin + orange citrus bitter finish. The finish lingers a bit, but then goes away as the carbonation cleans it all away.
Mouthfeel: Good carbonation, maybe just a bit scouring on the tongue but not fizzy. Some definite thickness in here, but it's hard to pull out past the carbonation.
Overall / Drinkability: I think this beer would be richer if the carbonation wasn't so high - I could pick out more of the malt, and it's definitely a malt rich beer but with some hops thrown in for good measure to temper the malt. Good, but in the end, not as good as some other Lagunitas brews I've had. Not sure if I would have it again or not.
