New Dogtown is a clear golden orange color with a large and creamy white head that has good retention and leaves heavy lacing. Aroma consists of a good deal of malts and white bread, with a bit of orange rinds.

Taste starts with grapefruit and orange rind, then stale bread and caramel malts, with a light bready, rindy, floral finish. Mouthfeel is a touch heavier than average with a bit above average carbonation, a bit grainy.

New DogTown – Pale Ale (6.2%) - Lagunitas Brewing Co. (California)
☆☆☆½

App: Pours a solid gold with a one and a half finger off white head that retains very well and leaves a lot of soapy lacing up the side of the glass. Lots of sediment floating around in this one.

Smell: Spicy and herbal hops notes dominate the nose with a light tropical fruit aroma, with some hints of savory herbs and mint. Black pepper and rosemary. Malts present and sweet, some biscuit like aromas very faint. Slight smell of cane sugar and caramel.

Taste: Taste is very hop-forward at first but well balanced enough that after the initial bittering wallop, a pleasant sweetness lingers and counterbalances the astringency of the hops. A little sour, and plenty bitter. Mellow creaminess in the true taste is totally murdered by a strong bitter aftertaste. Aftertaste is good however, bitter but not oppressive. As the beer warms the hops take on a more aggressive character and the balance quickly gets out of kilter.

Mouth: Good body that supports the hop bitterness, but a little heavy on the carbonation I feel.

Home tasting, 12oz bottle into Tulip. 1/29/14.
