12oz bottle into a Founders snifter
Bottled on the 99th day of 2013

A: Got about two fingers of nice-looking off white foam from a non-aggressive pour. Body is a dark copper varnish color and is pretty clear. A little bit of lacing on the glass.

S: Sweet smelling malts, some dark fruit, slight hop presence.

T: Big maltiness in this brew. Very sweet malts. Piney hops only aid in adding some balance despite the 66.6 IBU. Tiny bit of alcohol. Only the faintest hint at dark fruit. This just seems to be one of those malt-driven beers where distinct flavors don't pop out at you, but the beer just tastes good overall.

M: Fairly big body, smooth, and a little slippery. Alcohol adds some minor warmth in the mouth.

O: An excellent sipper. Just a great beer full of malty goodness (and that Lagunitas hop touch) that I have no problem taking some time with.

A: Deep copper, excellent clarity, lots of bubbles, thin but tenacious head.

S: Juicy-fruit malt, caramelized sugar, orange and mango hop character, smells great. A bit of booze but otherwise very nice.

T: Sweet caramely malts at the base with a nice bubblegum/cotton candy hop finish. Very easy to drink for a beer of this strength.

M: Full bodied, creamy, very nice to drink.

Undercover Investigation offers all the typical Lagunitas flavors with a big booze punch. Far too easy to drink this huge beer.

Dreamy copper-brown color, light-snowy head and bloomy lacing. Smells of brown sugar, sweet malt, and citrusy hops. Tastes stronger than you'd expect. More malt comes through than hops, but it finds a way to maintain an earthy presence while remaining balanced. This is a punchy ale, and there's no hiding that high ABV in its full-body. Finish is sweet and thin; Exactly what you'd want in a strong ale and a fine alternative for a frequent DIPA drinker.

Bottle poured into a Goose Island glass

Appearance: light brown, reddish amber with a thing white head. The lacing tends to break up when tilting the glass.

Aroma: very sweet, yet citrusy with a slight hop presence.

This beer tastes very sweet to me. The citrusy hops blend well with the sweet caramel-like malt blended nicely with the brown sugar.

The mouthfeel is thin with very little carbonation.

Overall this beer is very sweet, unlike what I expected from their "Virtual Taste" video that they published on YouTube. I was expecting it to be pretty bitter. However, I'm surprised this beer is 9.7% ABV because there is no alcohol presence in the taste. This is a really good sweet beer that will pair excellent with any spicy food.

bottle into Duvel glass

appearance: medium dark amber red/copper with 1 finger white head

smell: caramel, grapefruit, brown sugar, citrus, sweet malt, herbal hops

taste: very sweet and bitter, earthy hoppiness mixes with the brown sugar flavor for a balanced beer, especially for a 9.7% beer. You hardly taste the alcohol, you feel it but the sweet caramelized flavor masks it pretty good. This is a truly delicious beer.

mouthfeel: average to low carbonation, somewhat thin bodied for such a high abv beer

overall: a great hoppy sweet beer from Lagunitas, I would buy again. The sweetness and hoppiness is very well balanced and the alcohol is not too noticeable, one of my favorites from them.

12 oz.

Pours a brownish amber, yellowish fine head retains well, leaves a film as it dissipates.

Smells of rich caramel malts and piney hops.

Flavor is of piney hops, caramel, buttered bread, and a bit of citrus.

Full body with tingles of carbonation on the roof of the mouth. Slight warmth going down.

Really good strong hoppy ale. Most similar to an imperial/double IPA to me. Definitely worth trying and would have it again.
