Picked up a couple of singles at the end of May from Total Wine for $1.79 each. Bottled on 4-9-13. Been sitting in my beer fridge awaiting liberation since May...

Beer poured orange amber with a fine head 2 finger head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is sweet malts with a distinctly sour slant...not expecting this...

Taste is very sweet with a boatload of caramel malts, a bit sour in the finish, with some piney hops lingering in the background.

Mouthfeel is full bodied and smooth.

Overall i was a bit disappointed with this brew. Seems when i had it back in 2007 it had more of a hop balance. Also, i am very sensitive to sourness in beer and I am definitely catching that flavor. Not sure if there was some unintentional cross pollination at the brewery...

The colour is red with a tint of brown (30 EBC); the liquid clear. The two-finger beige head sinks very slowly leaving lots of lacing on the glass.

The smell is smooth with clean bitter notes, some caramel and dried fruits. Alcohol, dried fruits and fresh flowers. Very clean, perhaps a bit anonymous.

The taste is first bitter. Then, balancing clean sweet flavours emerge. Fruity notes; apricots and prunes. Somewhat citric hops. Medium to full body. The aftertaste got growing warming alcohol, dried fruits, caramel and harsh hoppy flavours. Alcohol dominates the finish.

The carbonation is medium strong, the many bubbles small and long lived. The liquid is quite light and dry for the style and strength.

A rather anonymous yet well crafted strong ale: I don’t really see the point.

Poured into a snifter.

Beautiful dark red amber color. I'd say it leans towards the red end of the spectrum more than the brown. Pours with a big head, but it fades quickly. Lacing is impressive, just about white and clingy.

A really nice balance between the fairly large amounts of hops and the malt. I'm impressed with the way Lagunitas was able to balance the two competing flavors. The beer feels heavy and thick, but once swallowed it seems to take on a lighter quality. Don't get me wrong, the flavors aren't going anywhere--they park on the tongue. But the texture seems to lighten in the back of the mouth.

I've always avoided Lagunitas for no good reason. An extremely irrational avoidance! as Undercover shows.

Pours an amber colour, pretty much dead in the middle of 'amber' on the spectrum. Head is off-white, sinking but leaving awesome trails of lacing behind. Lovely lace, nice colour. I like.

Smells very hoppy, but also very strong. There's a spiritous aroma to that, but lots of citrus - grapefruit, mostly, a touch of dessert wine, brandy, some cinnamon and raisin notes as well. Bit strong, but intriguing.

Taste is sweet and syrupy. Loads of malt, with a complex undercurrent of sticky buns, dried fruit and sherry. Again, spiritous edge on the back with a slightly smoky and buttery brandy flavour. Some resinous hop notes as well, but not very strong. The back is largely boozey-bitter. Decent, but yeah, very big.

Full; not as thick or syrupy as the flavour would suggest. Pleasant enough I guess.

Big, booze-flavoured, but not as overblown as it could have been. Retains a pleasant, and complex sweetness.
