This beer is very nice, despite my personal preferences leaning more toward the dark and malty than the light and hoppy. It pours a clear dark caramel color with an abundant head that laces the glass nicely. The scent is unexceptional, slightly citrus with a hoppy sharpness over a breadish malt smell. The mouth feel is smooth overall with a slight but surprising syrupy cling to the tongue and cheeks. Nothing obnoxious, just more than one would expect from a filtered American ale. The taste first presents as sweet and hoppy, but quickly balances out with a citrus malt flavor. It reminds me of Bell's Two Hearted Ale, but is overall a more decadent experience. For fans of Johnnie Walker, if Bells Two Hearted Ale were Black Label, this would be Green Label. Good vs. better, but not the best.

Had a draft at Lucky's sandwich company in Chicago. Low head, beautiful deep amber / brown. Deliciously hopped, low aromatic hops. Rather malted and spiced nose. Hey, it tastes great, it's high alcohol, and it's $5 per draft. I'm good.

Pours from the bottle a copper color with a creamy white head.
The aroma is predominantly citrus and tropical fruit, maybe some candied fruit and a hint of spice.
Plenty of bitterness in the taste along with orange and tropical fruit sweetness. A mouth-puckering long and bitter finish. One to chew on.
Mouthfeel is medium and sticky.
Probably my favorite Lagunitas beer to date.

Poured from bottle somewhat aggressively into snifter. Two finger frothy light beige head with great retention and decent lacing. After a couple minutes, head settles down to a rather thick film, but never totally dissipates. Brown and gold in color, and clear. Some amber shines through. Pine and bittering hops on nose, with tropical fruit accompanying. (I can't be certain if I'm smelling some hay-like characteristics or not. Perhaps it is just because I'm sitting next to a guinea pig cage.) Tropical fruits more prominent on tongue, namely mango and pineapple. Great bitterness with a sweet citrus attachment, would be considered too much by some, but I think it fits the style appropriately. Though strong, heat is hidden fairly well from aftertaste. Medium-heavy bodied, with a lighter feel, almost creamy. Lighter carbonation feeling lingering on center of tongue. Overall, very pleasant brew from a great brewery. For ~$8/sixer, I'd be happy to buy again.

12 oz. bottle poured into nonic

L: gold with a little red in it; crystal clear but full of debris (bottle-conditioning leftovers? looks like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale); thick offwhite/beige head of foam that is sticky at the top; keeps a fantastic thick collar of beige foam and a slight skin, and it shows plenty of bubbles rising in the glass -- bubbles almost lager-like; some lacing

S: very sweet tropical fruit; some orange; everything in the nose seems sweet, no bitter notes ... hop notes here are a grapefruit note getting pushed into something much sweeter from the malt

T: bitter pine and sweet mango ... a few other notes peak in here and there, including caramel on the sweet side and grapefruit on the bitter, but the featured stars here are the pine and mango, and they give the brew a mix of big bitter and big sweet notes; alcohol mostly hidden; the sweetness is so intense you figure there has to be sugar in it (again from the bottle conditioning?); a little too American DIPA caramely/mangoey for my personal tastes -- fans of those notes would love this brew because it has them in spades with the bitter bite offering some balance

F: solid all around, a bit light for so big a brew, but it makes for a crisp, drinkable beer

O: very American double IPA like in almost every way; the light crisp feel is pretty cool for a 9.3% ABV brew; at times the bitterness and alcohol taste seem to get confused, but it's not often; good beer but not one I'll seek out again

A very nice, smooth ale here. Malty, not getting much on the hop end with shut down, but it's just such an easy drinking beer for a relative heavy hitter. Very tasty.

Picked up a sixer at the local market the other day. This is my first time trying this strong ale from Lagunitas. I'm a big fan of their IPAs, so I have high hopes for this one. Poured straight from the 12 oz brown bottle in a pint glass.

L: Beautiful deep amber color, with over an inch of light khaki head that sticks around for a little while and leaves some nice lacing. Very clear, with light carbonation visible.

S: Very fruity. It's got a definite blueberry syrup aroma. There are herbal and citrus hop notes in the nose, as well, along with some more straightforward caramel malt sweetness. Quite pleasant.

T: This one has some fantastic flavor and drinkability that really belie the ABV. There's caramel malt and fruit sweetness at the outset. A bit of earthiness and hop brightness follows, with the hops really coming around at the back. Herbal and (to a lesser extent) citrus notes are at the back, which don't yield as much bitterness in the aftertaste as I was expecting (though it certainly brings the bitter). I was expecting some more warm alcohol taste in this one, but it never really materialized. This one is expertly balanced and dangerously drinkable for its ABV.

F: Medium-bodied, creamy, and bright. This one is lighter on the palate than I expected. It has weight, but it doesn't feel syrupy. It leaves enough hop bitterness to make it feel quite substantial, but drinkability doesn't suffer from this.

O: I'm not a big consumer of strong ales, but this one might have just changed the game. I love that this beer brings big hop and big malt flavors while remaining extremely smooth. I love that it packs a wallop without feeling like you're drinking a boilermaker that had two shots of vodka dropped in. I will definitely be seeking this one out more often.

Beautiful clear copper color, with a fluffy two-finger head that lasted a good five minutes, great lacing all the way down the glass. Lots of flowery aromas up front, along with a touch of grapefruit and a slightly soapy smell. The flavor had lots of grapefruit and onion up front, with a sweet caramel flavor in the background, very nice combo, with a bit of lingering alcohol. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, with some good carbonation prickliness on the tongue. Overall, it really like this beer, bitter up front with a nice sweet backbone.

Not a fan of this beer - overly bitter with lots of off-flavors. Definition of oily in texture, with a lot of flavor and aromas fighting each other. An unfocused attempt from a brewer I normally love.

Wow grabbed this beer on a whim has a hint of an old black label in bitterness but the smoothness of their hop stooped. I bought a 2nd 6 pack of this today in Virginia and it tasted more like a bock beer is this possible

Great beer. An inch or more head in the beer. Very very smooth, great color and amazing smell. The after taste is a little buttery but overall one of the top 5 beers I've ever had. Only bad thing about this beer is that it's limited release I say year round! Cheers!

Hoppy hoppy hoppy! joy joy joy! weird buttery after taste but really good! not the fruity hoppy type but super hoppy and taste like a lagunitas! very well done!

I am reading tropical fruits.....I dunno I am on my second six pack of this this week...drinking one-two per night and I dont really get tropical friuts like sucks. I just get a burnt sweet carmel malt super hoppy slight floral. It has that piney floral hops but not like sucks or sumpin fruity hops.
Its still a pretty great beer though....one of my favorite non super fruity IPA kinda beers.
I guess there is a touch of fruity at the end....but its not really up front as much as the bitter hops are.

Copper/caramel color with white head. Aroma of citrus and floral hops, some sweet caramel malts. Taste follows, with a bit of a dry alcohol finish. Delicious and relaxing sipper.

12 fluid oz brown bottle
Bottled on February 27th, 2015
Reviewed on April 23rd, 2015
Served in a Lagunitas jar

Poured a copper body with a nice amber glow. Generous off-white head, well over an inch. Ample amount of sticky white lacing clung to the sides of the glass.

Sweet notes of caramel glazed malts were the dominant character of the nose. Tangier notes of sweet citrus, think mild grapefruit and orange peel, stood out as well. Slight hint of herbs spice.

Dense hit of sweet malts up front. Caramel and molasses. Sharper notes of citrus and pine quickly cut through the malts. Finished semi-dry with a slight hint of alcohol. Medium bodied. Moderate/low carbonation.

Another great offering from Lagunitas. Price point is right around fifteen cents an ounce in the Chicago area, a heck of a value in my book.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber with tall, long lasting, fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of citrusy hops, tropical fruit and caramel malt. Body is medium and tangy. Citrusy hops, caramel malt, brown sugar, ripe fruit, some vegetables and alcohol fill the mouth. Finish is long, semi-dry. This brew has some unusual taste, I don’t think I will drink it often.

grabbed this as a single bottle, poured into a pint glass.

nice 2 finger lingering head. Very nice dark caramel/almost red in color.
I got a strong spice and toasty feel to the nose with some brown sugar.
I didn't get the citrus flavors off the nose but are very present upfront on the palette. Maltiness turns to bitter at the end. Lingers a bit but overall this is a great offering as I typically expect from Lagunitas. ABV is hidden pretty well for this being 9+%
I would seek this out again for sure.

Very similar to some other of Lagunitas' stronger ales, especially Brown Shugga & Gnarlywine. Sharp grapefruit citrus on the nose, follows through to the flavor with some burnt sugar mixed in. Solid, like everything Lagunitas does, but some of their stuff starts to bleed together.

Excellent sweet malt beer. Pours an amber color with a nice 2 finger head. Wonderful taste with a bit of hops, plenty of malt that is sweet. Very enjoyable - typical of Lagunitas.

Pour was a deep red, with a semi-decent head and a malty aroma. Taste is a little malty, but not too notable otherwise. Finish is a little bitter and not too robust. I pretty much found this an entirely unremarkable brew.

This one tastes similar to the Lagunita's Cooper Ale but with more flavor. Not my favorite from this brewery but they don't make a bad beer! The best part of this beer is the way it hits you. You get buzzed after 8 Ounces. Easy to drink but really hoppy and real bitter.

Very well balanced beer. It has a nice hops profile--making it similar to an IPA. It's plenty boozy without being harsh or off-putting. Notes of pine, citrus, rich malts. A strong offering from an incredible brewery.

Clear, copper-colored with a couple fingers of cream colored head that laces the glass like crazy.

The nose reminds of a double IPA with notes of pine, sugar and alcohol.

The flavor is well balanced between bitter and sweet with just a little alcohol in the aftertaste.

The mouthfeel is medium body and smooth but the alcohol heat lingers for a nice numbing effect.

Glad I discovered this. It's a very refreshing brew despite the elevated abv.

I love Lagunitas and I've never seen this one before so I had to pick it up.

A - Beautiful dark ruby color. Clear with a huge white head and stong lacing.

S - Sweet hop character that is fruity almost like fresh sweet blueberries. There are also the some of the more traditional citrus and herbal hop tones. There is a rich maltiness under the hops with some light alcohol and caramel in the background. It has a traditional ESB, fruity yeast character but to the next level.

T - The taste also has that almost berry taste with a sweet fruitiness that comes from the yeast, the malt, and the hops all melding together in one fine beer. It is definitely an American Strong ale with the richness and the hops to try and duke it out on your palate. The fruity yeast and hops are more predominant on the tongue with the malty, grainy, and caramel flavors mixing well together. There is a bitterness that attempts to compliment the sweetness and is clean on the finish.

M - High to medium mouth-feel with medium to high carbonation. For being almost 10% ABV and a very sweet flavor I would expect this beer to be almost cloying but with the higher carbonation and hop bitterness it does not stick but instead just teases your tongue asking for more.

Overall, a really delicious beer and definitely a unique American Strong ale. Not as overtly powerful as Bastard nor as malty as Hairy Eyeball but is very good and is balanced enough to have more than one of (although the alcohol will sneak up on you.) This is the perfect beer for early spring with plenty of flavor to awaken your soul but enough alcohol to warm you toes.
