Look: A clear, deep copper, with a solid, long-lasting, cream-colored head that leaves behind thick rings of lace. A good -ooking beer by any standards.

Smell: The aroma is strong in this one. The C-hops are of the forest variety. There is a good helping of grass, but plenty of moist earthiness as well. Coconut and whiskey come through as things warm up, but before the fragrance becomes liquor laden, butterscotch and caramel provide mellowing balance. It's a complex bouquet, but sort of sullen as well; I was expecting more citrus, something brighter.

Taste: Lots of hop bitterness but plenty of hop flavor to balance--citrus rinds turn to tropical punch and back again, with biting and lasting grapefruit sharpness. But there is a heartiness as well, due to a caramel malt backbone that grows nuttier and more complex as time goes on.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and deceptively light, with moderate carbonation and a dry finish. The alcohol is nearly undetectable in spite of a 9.7 ABV.

Overall: The malt is complex, the hops are aggressive, it seems as if one should play a supporting role. But it is an interesting beer and one whose popularity I can understand-- this clash of the Titans is a novelty, perhaps. And as frustrated as I was by this beer's ambiguity, by the end, I wanted another. Even if the colors didn't go well together, they were all very nice on their own. (1,384 characters)

Served from 12oz bottle

A — Pours a deep amber/coppery hue, there is a great bit of clarity. As well as a puffy, khaki colored head that sits atop the beer. Leaves behind some quite nice lacing.

S — Smells bold and rich, lots of bit and sweet malt tones. Little bit of hop bitterness.

T — Tastes very strong, rich, malty, bold, and sweet, lots of malt complexities and a bit of an earthy hop balance to it.

M — Medium-Full bodied, with a big and sticky finish.

O — Nice overall, just very, very malty and strong, which is good, just a total change of pace from Lagunitas. (589 characters)

Boozy, but not in a bad way. Sweet aroma. Brief citrus notes in the front, followed by malty flavor in the middle. An almost smokey aftertaste that subsides. Solid beer. (169 characters)

A moderate pour from a stubby 12 ounce bottle into a shaker pint produces a sticky, chunky off-white head of about an inch. The beer is a ruddy golden color with medium carbonation.

The aroma suggests leafy, citrusy hops with just a slight vegetal note and a subtle malt presence (but you know it's there). The flavor is complex, with brown shugga and caramel notes underlying a vigorous but not overbearing hop presence that balances floral and citrus notes and a touch of earthiness. A lingering pungency rests on the middle and back of the tongue, providing a bridge between sips. Some pleasant alcohol warming and just a slight alcohol bite in the aftertaste are really the only hints of the strength of this downright dangerous brew.

This brew is well-crafted, extremely drinkable, and readily available at a very reasonable price. The quality and price point would be difficult to match. Outstanding, as usual. Kudos to this brewery for producing world class beer that any schmuck can afford. Bravo! (1,015 characters)

12oz. Bottle

Poured into a chalice a very nice slightly cloudy golden amber color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice one-finger fizzy/creamy off-white head, which leaves a nice big island in the glass with some nice sticky lacing as well. The nose is malty, with a nice touch of hops, picking up some cherries, figs, plums. The taste is very very nice, sweet, hoppy, with some nice malt notes, dark fruits. Medium body, ABV is hidden very well, but still watch out. Overall a very tasty brew, glad to see this one in Utah. (529 characters)

This one pours a very dark amber, with a minimal white head. The aroma is very sugary sweet. It's slightly boozy with a heavy malt flavor and coarse hops in the finish. Overall, I'd say it drinks a bit like a sweet Barleywine. (226 characters)

Pours a clear copper/ light wood brown color. Rich off-white head. Lacing ends up nice all over the pint.
Smells of fruity hops, pineapple and floral. Great aroma.
Taste follows the nose, but with a sweet malt backbone for balance. Woody earth/ forest, sips clean, slight herbal tone as well.
Smooth sipping, creamy, medium feel, slight stickiness.
Solid strong ale. More medicinal/ herbal than I prefer, but great stuff nonetheless. (437 characters)

On tap at Oak and Oar. So nice to have a new heavyweight brewery in the state. Let's see how this one works.

Reddish-brown in color with a sturdy and lasting tan crown. Aroma involves some fruitiness and not much else. Tastes of persimmon, grain, syrup and taffy. Has a smooth and quick alcohol burn and goes down medium to heavy.

Not a superstar by far, but a tasty welcome to town for sure. (399 characters)

Good beer with an even better back story. This one is a very strong ale. Doesn't taste refreshing like other beers, this one hits you almost immediately. I can maybe drink 2-3 in a row before the taste is just too overwhelming. A nice beer to relax and get a good buzz going but I wouldn't keep drinking them for the long haul. (332 characters)

Grainy feel. Toasty caramel, lots of sweetness and prune/berry fruit, and a slight bubblegum flavor. The alcohol taste is virtually not present for such high content. Big and very flavorful. The oily hops linger after the sweetness fades. Unusual, and very good (268 characters)

Pours a dark copper colour. Malt, some citrus and mild pine aroma.
Tastes like strong sweet malt, grapefruit just a hint of pine.
Mouth feel is mildly tart with a nice bitterness at the end.
Potent but not predictable
A great offering from Lagunitas. (250 characters)

Appearance: Clean amber, with a huge head of off-white suds. Thick and detailed lace.

Aroma: Bitter hops, with some floral and pine (and grapefruit) tones.

Taste: Deliciously smooth, this “American Strong Ale” is centered around a huge hop bill, with lots of bitter grapefruit and pine notes alongside some big malts to balance it all out. A very flavorful ale, with a slight warming finish, yet masterfully masking the potent 9.3% ABV. A wonderful and easy-to-drink ale. (478 characters)

From a bottle into a snifter.

Beer is dark amber in color with one finger of off white foam and tight lace in the glass.

Smell is hoppy and woody with malty background. I'm getting some sweet citrus as well maybe grapefruit.

Taste is quite unique. Very piney and earthy with that grapefruit citrus popping up in the finish. This beer has a different bitterness about it. It's not your typical bitter hop flavor.

Feel is very heavy. Beer is dense and almost chewy. Flavors coat and stay on the palate for a while. Very nice feel. (536 characters)

Unfortunately not as good as I was hoping for. Not sure how to describe this style of hop taste, but I've have had others like it before. Too "earthy" if that makes any sense. Nothing special for me is what I'm getting at, long story short. (240 characters)

One of my favorite ales, the name is perfect because you'd never guess you're scarfing down a 9% ale until it's too late. You'll be out of commission before you saw it coming. Undercover Shut-down. (197 characters)

Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale brewed by Lagunitas Brewing Company. This brew has an ABV of 9.30% , and it pours out a deep amber color. This brew has a nice off white head. Lagunitas makes several really fine beers, and Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale is one of their best. UISDA has a high (9.3%) alcohol content, but the flavor of this beer, with pine and citrus notes exploding on your tongue, overwhelms the alcohol content, making it ideal for a warm summer evening. (305 characters)

12 oz. bottle into a snifter. Pours a rich amber with about 1 finger of sticky white foam. Smells slightly boozy and sweet with notes of grapefruit and roasted wood. Dense mouthfeel, and very smooth. Sweet malt up front accompanied by grapefruit and maybe some pineapple. A spiciness creeps in middleways, and the beer finishes with a piney-bitterness that sticks around on the aftertaste. Finishes smooth enough, but maybe a little drier than I would've expected.

Overall, very good. Strong ales aren't my favorite, but this one is exceptionally balanced. Plenty of sweet malt from beginning to end with the bitterness staying at a managble, if not minimal level. As with most ales, as it warmed up the malt became slightly more pronounced and the bitterness subdued even more. (779 characters)

Poured into a Lagunitas largemouth glass.

Look: A pretty clear deep copper body holds up a frothy cream colored head, which retains well. The glass is literally covered in sheets of foamy lacing.

Aroma: A lot of cedar wood, hops, and a very subtle underlying malty sweetness.

Taste: The malty sweetness comes out in the form of rich caramel and maybe even a slight toffee context. The beer is balanced out with cedar and piny hops. Plenty of spiciness in this as well. The finish is bitter with citrus rind leaving an aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Pretty thick, but it goes down smooth. A bit boozy.

Overall: For one of my least fsvorite styles, this is pretty much to my liking. I'd rather have it in colder months, but it's a good beer regardless. (748 characters)

In a plastic cup at mad max fury road screening. Excellent beer to match the movie. Chewy sweet taste, lots of hops. Fruity taste from hops and body, alcohol is there but mostly hidden. Lots of complexity.

Had again later in the bottle and the fruitiness was actually more resinous and piny. The body didn't seem as thick either. Still tasted great. (351 characters)

Had on tap at the Pig & fiddle.
L: Pours brilliant garnet tinted amber under a 1” white foam cap that provides light lace.
S: Citrus, spice, malt. T: Spicy with a cola sweetness that dries out on the finish. Moderate hop bitterness is rounded and not harsh.
F: Medium to medium full body and medium to medium low carbonation. Silky smooth.
O: An easy to drink beer at a good price. (387 characters)

Had on-tap at Champs in State College, PA poured into a snifter.

L: Pours a semi-opaque dark amber. Thin off-white head that falls rapidly. Nice lacing.

S: Caramel and malts with some aggressive floral hops in the mix.

T/F: Lovely caramel malt backbone complemented by a typically robust Lagunitas hop profile make this one powerful beer. The hops tend towards the floral with only mild citrus notes and grapefruit. Hearty with a nice alcoholic warmth towards the finish. Mild carbonation and deceptively drinkable.

O: Another great Lagunitas beer with lots going on. Great hop profile on top of a solid malt backbone make this one a keeper. (657 characters)

This beer is wonderful. Strong, malty with enough hops to keep it interesting. Mouthfeel is so silky. Smell is citrusy and clean. But the taste is what keeps me coming back. This ale is delicious. And it comes in 6 packs for under 10 bucks. Perfect! (249 characters)

12oz bottle poured hard into a brandy snifter.

Look: Deep amber-orange, burnt orange, or imperial orange body. Off white 1.5 inch fluffy head. Excellent, slow curtains. Broken lacing is super sticky. Legs are hard to see with broad curtains and all of the sticky lacing.
Smell: Sugar, candied tangerine and pine/hops.
Taste: Hops, pine, and sweet citrus notes.
Feel: Medium body. Lower carbonation that expands densely.

Overall - This is a great looking beer. The art left on the sides of my snifter are interesting. This has one of the stickiest heads I have seen in a while. This could pass as a double IPA or imperial IPA, and is similar to Port Brewing Anniversary Ale. I like this very much. (715 characters)

Looks real nice, brown body with red hues, white head with sticky lacing on the glass. Smell is malty sweetness, alcohol, wet hops, and over-ripe orange peel. Taste has some alcohol and hop dryness and bitterness upfront. This turns to sweet floral and bready cream like flavors. Both spicy and sweet. The alcohol, however, is almost out of place noticeable. That's probably one of the few turn offs here, which makes it not too drinkable. I do think this would be better if I paired it with some food. It is good though, real good. (532 characters)
