A standard pour of Lagunitas Brewing Company's A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale yields a pale amber body and a viscous eggshell head that takes time to settle into a sticky white ring. A smattering of bubbles slowly rise to the top. Will this beer be too thick and heavy on the tongue?
Strong citral and floral aromas of American hops waft up from the glass and fill my nose as I pour. As I lift the glass to my nose, I am greeted by the smell of clean, fresh hops. The beer's wheat malts are inappreciable.
The beer is gentler and fluffier than expected. Hop aromas dominate, but are supported by the flavor of alcohol and lightly toasted grain. The beer is less bitter than expected. The wheat malt is palpable in a gentle spicy flavor that nicely complements the citral characteristics of the hops. This spicy flavor is most pronounced in the middle of the palate and in the beer's lasting aftertaste. Sweet ruby-red grapefruit, black pepper, and chrysanthemum command the palate, but are supported by cloves, and lightly toasted honey-wheat bread. I picked up notes of spiced banana-raisin bread in my last few sips.
The wheat malt in this cleanly hopped, high-ABV pale ale creates a depth and complexity of flavor that I'll crave. Delicious.

A: light yellow. Clear. Thick-foamy head. Sticky lacing throughout drink.
T: citrus. Pine. Medium bitterness. Definite wheat in the malt profile. Alcohol is hidden well.
M: medium carbonation. Medium body. On the dry side.
