On tap at Armsby Abbey. Served in a standard pint glass.
A - Pours a super clear amber orange color with a thick finger of off-white foamy head with decent retention. Dies to a small collar and leaves behind rings of lacing on the sides of the glass.
S - Hops are the focus here. Fruity, citrusy aromas up front with some hints of pineapple and just a tiny bit of pine. Malts are hidden by the hops almost totally with just a slight contribution of breadiness and a mild wheaty/grainy aroma.
T - As with the aroma, the hops are the focus. Big hits of grapefruit with a bit of orange and some pineapple. Bitterness is higher than most other pale wheat ale's I've had. This seems to be more of an IPA than anything else. Malt character is low - only minor contribution from the wheat, giving a bit of a graininess and some hints of breadlike flavor too - but totally in the background.
M - Light to medium bodied with medium carbonation level, prickly/tingley on the tongue. Lingering hop bitterness, maybe just a bit sticky and resiny.
D - Very enjoyable beer...more IPA than pale wheat ale. Plenty of hop flavor and bitterness...hard to beat as a companion to spicy food. Would be easy to have a couple more of these.

I discovered this beer several years ago and was enamoured. I'd never had such a suculent tasting IPA before. I was a regular Sierra Nevada Pale Ale guy (which is my everyday) and the flavour here was a wake up call for me. I love this beer. This is one of the best I have ever had and I will grab it without hesitation from the shelf. And like most products from Lagunitas, I have enjoyed its subtlety beautiful flavor and consistency every time I buy it. If you ever have anyone offer this to you at a gathering or whatever, they deserve a kiss right on the mouth... per Lydia Loveless, and hopefully she looks like the Varga Girl on the label.
