Tonight I'm reviewing Lagunitas A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale against Sierra Nevada 2013 Celebration "Fresh Hop Ale" and Firestone Walker Double Jack IIPA.

Maybe it's unfair to compare a seasonal beer with two solid IIPA's, but that said, that's what I'm drinking tonight.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass, A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale is dark yellow with a bodacious head that settled down to about a finger high.

The aroma is citrus and pine resin, the taste similar, slightly sweet with a delightful aftertaste.

This is one of my favorite brews from Lagunitas, available year round, it is a regular in my IIPA rotation. I consider it a top 10 in the IIPA's I have tasted.

It is difficult to find American wheat ales that aren't pretty insipid to my palate, even from decent breweries. American wheat is such a broad style and many err on the side of bland and bubbly, presumably a profit-driven decision. On the other hand, Lagunitas rarely if ever disappoints and has a reputation for heavy-handed hopping so I snagged a six-pack of this when I happened upon it at a so-called wine market that also has a decent craft selection. Worth every penny. A bottle of this elixir pours a pleasing golden yellow with a lot of thick white head. The brewer wanted that classic wheat head retention and executed this variable like a pro ... Stuff sat there like meringue. Aroma was also pleasantly evocative of lemon meringue pie, among other signs of a solid malt-hops balance ... I get mixed citrus, a grainy spice, and a little resin or pine all on top of a graham cracker malt backbone. Palate is fairly chewy, creamy and smooth but pungently bitter: Lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit, passion fruit and cantaloupe, starfruit, apricot, and a touch of something that recalls white wine, this starts like a fruit bowl but ends with a grainy, bitter coda of piney wood, green bananas, and some floral components that evoke tobacco or sweetgrass. Not particularly estery or phenolic as per the American style, this is a wheat ale hopped like an IPA and is the perfect antidote to North American wheat beers that taste like foam and not much else. May be too bitter for some expecting a more traditional wheat experience.

Pale straw appearance, thick bubbly head with Citrus, pine, tropical fruit in the nose with cereal and hay in the background. Taste is sweet without being cloying, with fresh bread crust, bright and lively, with fruity hops reminiscent of passion fruit, mango, guava, dragon fruit. Medium thin mouthfeel, highly carbonated. Delicious beer, truly unique.

Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale
Lagunitas Brewing Company
---12oz bottle poured into pint glass---

Appearance
Clear amber color with a sturdy one finger head and good sticky lace.

Smell
Oh the smell! Strong citrus smells almost drown out the sweet malt.

Taste
Grapefruit and orange with a hint of pine

Mouth-feel
The wheat definitely takes a back seat to the delicious hops. Good amounts of carbonation, and fairly well balanced.

Overall
I really enjoyed this beer! Pours great, smells excellent, and tastes even better. Flavor lingers in your mouth, begging you to have another - and I think I will!
