Poured into a snifter on 9/8/09

A - Sharp & intense amber color. 1/4 inch head with just a thin layer of foam as far as retention is concerned. Decent lacing throughout.

S - Hearty hop aroma - grapefruit, pine & hints of orange. Kind of sweet. Enticing to say the least.

T - Zesty hop bite & oh, so tasty! Spicy all the way - bold flavor of pine with a healthy dose of grapefruit, as well. Any malt in there has long since curled into a fetal position & is begging the hops to cease kicking its pathetic little ass. These hops are vicious.

M - Medium-bodied with enough carbonation to prevent any cessation in the hop stampede. There is a good bit of hop resin & lingering bitterness.

D - Outstanding drinkability. Bitter & spicy from start to finish. Again, this beer is remarkably tasty. But take caution - if the alcohol doesn't get you, the hops surely will.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Crystal clear, and shimmering shiny body. Bright brass orange with slow rising thin carbonation. Head is fluffy, large and in control. Four finger tall on an easy pour, with swiss cheese looking head and good staying power. A bright beautiful gorgeous looking brew.

Aroma is surprisingly closed and very small. I am reaching to find something to talk about here. This is really strange. Nothing wrong or offensive, just, empty on first few explorations.

Palate finally delivers. Big juiced tropical notes of pineapple and mango. Lychee like fruits with a big juiced body. Real nice soft malt body, with virtually no sweetness and letting the hops lead the pack. A nice interesting wine big thickness to this, matching also with some white pinot grigio like grape flavors as well.

Overall this is real impressive but it has to me virtually no bouquet which seems so strange.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear gold color. The head is three fingers high, with a white shade. There are huge bubbles and a soapy texture almost similar to cola, so it's not the most attractive looking thing. Retention is lacking, but there are some nice webs of lacing are left behind.

S: This is 100% classic Lagunitas hoppy goodness. What makes it a step above even other Lagunitas offerings is the massive wallop of fresh grapefruit I pick up. It's also slightly sweet, with noticeable wheat and pineapple notes. Really a wonderful nose.

T: Really a wonderful nose - one part textbook Lagunitas IPA, one part citrus bomb. This has huge orange flavors completely enveloping the palate. The finish is actually fairly sweet, with a healthy wheat flavor. Probably the biggest compliment I have for this beer is how juicy it is (juicy DIPA = elite DIPA as far as I'm concerned). I'm not exactly waxing as poetically as I would with most top-notch beers, but that's actually due to it being too damn tasty more than anything else. The ONLY complaint I have is a wish for a *bit* more bitterness. Just a bit.

M: The initial finish is fairly sweet, but the dryness builds almost creating a cottonmouth sensation. Texture and carbonation wise, it's about on par with most DIPAs (though the wheat does give it a softer, creamier feel over the norm). If there's ANY flaw, it's that it's not the most drinkable DIPA out there. But. I. Don't. Care. It would still be absolutely delicious even if it had the consistency of black strap molasses.

O: Lagunitas just continues to deliver time after time after freaking time. I could almost give up random ticking just to drink their beers more often. Should have bought a six-pack of this, shoulda coulda woulda...

Sweet, bready aroma, hints of citrus. Golden color with a mild lace. Huge, aggressive taste that pops your eyes open on first sip. Strong pine, grapefruit, malt -- it’s a powerhouse. And at 8.5%, wow, that is a tasty DIPA. Usually at 8.5% we're on the border of sweet and boozy, but this is still very juicy.

12 oz, julian code lets me know it was bottled on July 11. Code also suggests this is coming out of Chicago. 2 weeks old!

A: Looks pretty much like all other Lagunitas double IPAs.

S: Fresh hops, that classic Lagunitas hop aroma. Some wheat in there as well. Not in your face as other IPAs of theirs, but still nice.

T: Delicious.

M: Fantastic. Perfect amount of carbonation and has a softness to it. Maybe it's that Chicago water. And holy crap this thing is 8.7%?

O: A lot of comparisons to Sucks, but I don't really see it. This is just a bigger Little Sumpin to me, which is exactly what the name suggests. Sucks is a different beer, and much better IMHO. But this one is great, and Lagunitas wins again.
