This is one of those beers with most excellent lacing. I don't know why great lacing qualifies as a higher rating in my mind, but IPAs with great lacing seem to always possess that great sticky hoppiness that prevails over all other flavors in the mix. This one has bubbly, sticky white lace that coats all sides of the glass and stays there. Nice, well-retained head gradually shrinks from 2 fingers to a nice thick skim and stays there as well. The beer a hazy toasted honey color.

Very crisp and refreshing aroma here. The grapefruit is very present, along with a bittersweet orange and bright grass. It only hints of the malts inside.

The complexity of the hop bitterness really comes out in the flavors of this beer. I definitely get the juicy grapefruit from the smell, and it is joined by as sticky, oily simcoe-like presence. The citrus is very well-defined, and reminds me a little of Christmastime citrus flavors like clementines and bitter oranges. The malts provide a nice backdrop to the hop-forward flavors, coming across as toasty and only slightly caramelized so that they don't oversweeten the beer. For a DIPA, this one doesn't punch you in the mouth. It is pretty nicely balanced for the style, and definitely full of flavor, which I appreciate immensely. It is moderate in mouthfeel, with the oily hops competing against pretty good carbonation. Super-sticky finish on the palate as expected from the lace.

Drinkability is really good for this beer. The alcohol is well-hidden behind the hops. I only get its presence in the warmth that rises to my cheeks about halfway through the bottle. It is incredibly balanced for the style, something I don't always expect to get from Lagunitas. Definitely recommended.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Rich honey-gold with good sized white head.

Smell: Grapefruit, orange, mango and pine. Very hoppy but sweet aroma.

Taste: Seems to be three stages to each sip. First, there is a sweet and slightly tart hop onslaught of grapefruit, orange and mango. Then the hops become more balanced with malts, where a wheat taste is evident. Finally, it is somewhat spicy, bitter and piney at the finish, with some lingering sweet and tart grapefruit.

Feel: Full bodied, thick and chewy. Moderate carbonation with a semi-dry finish.

Overall: Nice, unorthodox Double IPA, but the strong sweetness means that I prefer the Little Sumpin Sumpin base beer.
