22oz bottle in a snifter glass

Appearance: very dark brown with a small head that dissipated quickly

Nose: cream, chocolate and coffee

Taste: rich and creamy, coffee, milk chocolate, malty

I thought this was more of an American stout. I did like the art on the bottle.

On tap at the Lagunitas Tap Room

nice dark brown almost black color. Moderately carbonated, no head.

Slightly boozy Bourbon aroma, caramel, sugary.

Goes down nice but is a bit sweet. Not real creamy, more like the feel of a brown ale. Is this a stout? No coffee or chocolate. Reminds me of an American Strong. Stated as 13% ABV, goes down like 8-9.
Very drinkable except for the sweetness.

On tap at the Grad in Davis. Ruben and Jets aged in a Maker's Mark barrel.

A - Pours brown with a 1/2 finger of head. Dissipated immediately. Left no lacing.

S - Bourbon, vanilla, oakiness, and toffee.

T - Bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits, some oak, toffee, and light alcohol.

M - Moderate bodied and well balanced. There is moderate alcohol, which leaves the quaff slightly astringent.

D - Overall good, but needs carb, color, and head. The color should be darker for a stout.

So, here's my beef with Lagunitas. They often come out with some really impressive and exclusive brews, but they never bottle them. This leads the majority of the drinking public to assume they don't ever make any unique beers, which couldn't be farther from the truth. This beer, which I had pulled on cask into an imperial pint glass at my new favorite bar, Taps in Petaluma, is an example of this mentality.

This came out of the cask as black stout should. The beer was a beautiful opaque black and the head was nearly non-existent. Did a transparency check, and indeed, no light escaped this beer.

What else can be said about the nose of this beer than bourbon. There is some hints of dark fruits but generally this is a bourbon stinking brew.

The mouthfeel is fantastic. I just adore beers pulled on cask and this beer transported me back to my year spent in the UK. Syrupy goodness with just a hint of carbonation.

Let me start the taste section by commenting that, since this beer was on cask, it came out near room temperature. This helped the brew immensely as the warmer flavors of the bourbon became incredibly dominant. I am not a fan of Ruben and the Jets normally, as I find it to be too weak in flavor. But, in this bourbon barrel age version it provides an excellent background for the boozy woody notes to come to the fore. The beer does provide a nice vanilla sweetness, though again, this beer is about the barrel aging.

I had a hard time finishing a whole pint of this stuff due to its exceedingly boozy nature. Definitely a sipper, I find that this is a beer to be enjoyed over the course of a couple hours.

-blackish brown...not midnight though. bubbly at 1st, pretty solid for cask

-bourbon for sure, caramelly malts as well

-some chocolate in there. the bourbon is very dominant followed by a strong caramel taste

-it is smooth and what a cask beer should be

-liked it. very much better than the non barreled jets
